View Full Version : Under what circumstances can an employer deduct money from a paycheck

My daughter works for a doctor in Ga. She calls my crying all the time at the things he does! He pays them hourly , but if they work late or work on weekends, he does not pay them at all. He says if they choose to come in or work late, that is their choice. If his Medicare collections don't come in in a timely manner, he deducts money from their checks saying that they are not getting the collections in fast enough. He yells at them in front of patients, tells them that they have no work ethic, even cusses asking them things like "what is this S___". I am fairly certain that he is violating all kinds of labor laws and may be bordering on workplace harassment! Any thoughts?

So why does she work late or come in early "if this is her choice"

He can not deduct money for Medicare payments not coming in properly, They may sue him for that amount or report him to the department of labor.

Be sure she has a new job ready, since we all know what will happen once she sues or reports

For starters - she's old enough to work and she calls you crying because her boss is mean to her? How old is she?

Otherwise, yes, I agree with FrChuck.

Federal law requires that hourly employees be paid for every hour they work. Unless they are working on commission, he can't reduce their pay if his collections are down.

Sounds like he is violating the law and she should report it to the GA Dept of Labor. But she needs to be prepared to find a new job.
