I've been to India a few times, and I feel their beliefs are quite ineteresting. When I asked around I figured out a mythologial story behind Ganesha getitng his elephant head. It was his father, Shiva, who beheaded Ganesha for spying on him (not sure of all the details, I don't remember it all). And later when Ganesha's mother became immensly depressed about it, Shiva asked for help from other gods to get a head for his son. Vishnu, another prime god in Hinduism, sent his weapon for the task, and it got an elephant head for Ganesha. That's the story, I guess.
