My mother never put my fathers name on my birth certificate. (nice one mom) I found him a couple of years ago and met him for the first time and it was great and blah blah blah and he's OK with me putting his name on it, but I have no idea where to start. What do I need to get from him to do this? He doesn't live in the states anymore, is this going to make it more difficult? Is it a long process? Help!! Thanks!

Your father;s name to your birth certificate? How old are you and is the father willing?

I'm not a lawyer either but I think you might start your research by going to your county court house and asking there. Many counties have forms available and instructions for common legal matters to enable you to do these things pro bono (without a lawyer). Or, call a local attorney - many will give a free consultation. If you are a minor, your mother or father would have to do this for you.

I made an error... representing yourself (not having a laywer) is not "pro bono"... that's when a lawyer does services for free. I meant to say "pro se". Sorry to the legal experts out there for my faux pas!
