HP Pavilion p7-1007c, Windows 7 Home Premium, SP-1, 64 bit

I just installed a CanoScan LiDE 210 scanner. Now whenever I do a scan, I get an empty Notepad file named Sti_Trace.log in the main User Folder. If I delete it, it reappears on the next scan. It doesn't matter where I save the scanned image on the PC, this file still appears in the same place.

Oddly, I installed this same scanner on exactly the same model PC several months ago, and did not have this problem. The PC failed and was exchanged for this brand new one.

My Google searches have yielded no solution, other than it has something to do with the Still Image Monitor, but I can't find much about that either.

Called Canon Tech Support. They said they never heard of this, so it must be my PC, therefore they couldn't help me.

Since I did not have this situation on the previous install on same model PC, I'm hopeful there is some way to use my scanner without this annoying file appearing each time.

If it's not causing any issue, then leave it..
You could always hide it if you want ;)

Hiding it would be fine with me. Can you tell me how to hide an individual log file?

Right click > Properties > Check hidden ;)

Thank you so much. After all these years, I never knew you could hide an individual file. I've seen that check box a million times, but it just never occurred to me.

Just for your entertainment, I called Cannon, Microsoft, posted this question on the Seven Forum, and absolutely no one suggested this incredibly simple solution.

I usually leave my Folder Options set to "Show Hidden Files", but I can always turn that on of necessary. This crazy empty log file was really bugging me.

I Googled the heck out of this Sti_Trace file. There are a gazillion people out there asking the same question, but not a single answer (that I could find).

Of course, you'll find it in 3 seconds. Then I'll really feel like an idiot.

Nope, I got the same results, and thought on a different tack.
Basically if it is recreated every time you scan then it's clearly some sort of system/scanner temp file.
As it doesn't cause any harm then hiding it would be in order, especially if it's slightly annoying..

I was expecting some guy on the Seven Forum to send me some crazy registry hack. Yikes!

NEVER touch the registry, seriously NOT advisable, unless you know EXACTLY what the results will be..



I do IT for a living and the number of times I have hacked the registry can be counted on one hand..

I stay out of the registry, believe me.

This is weird. I did not type the last line in my post (#9) above. I don't do IT for a living, and have no idea where that came from.
