I ran a 14/2 burial wire to my pool from an outlet under my house. After about 2 hours the pump feels hot. Is this wire good enough and is this normal.

What are the electrical requirements of the pump?

Well not knowing whether you have done any sizing of the motor, conductors, controls, I'm going to say no.

If what you've given me is off the motor label, than I need to be a little more specific.

I need the horsepower and the FLA - if it is on the motor nameplate.

At first blush, it appears that you have attached a motor that requires 15 amp to a 15 amp circuit. So my initial answer would be no.

Also, pool pump motors must have the conductors inside a raceway and not just buried.

Did you do the wiring for the pool? Did you review the requirement of NEC Article 680?

My friend is an electrician and he did the wiring for me. He ran a 14/2 wire from the outlet under my house. He put a 20 amp receptacle for the pump to plug into. That's really all I know. I think it's a 1 hp pump. I will look tomorrow and tell you.

If you friend is an electrician and he put a 20 amp receptacle on 14/2 wire he is not going to keep his licence much longer.

Replace the wire with the proper #12. I also hope you got it all inspected, although I doubt it.
#12 is the minimum size cable you can run because the ground must be at least #12.
The outside portion cannot be cable. It must be individual conductors in conduit. This is because the ground must be insulated for any portion of the wiring to pool equipment that is outside.

I get the impression that your friend is not much of an electrician.

What I mean is any portion of the wiring that is outside the structure must have an insulated ground. The interior portion of the wiring to a pool motor can be cable.

Keep in mind this only applies to a single family dwelling. Other than that it is ALL conduit with insulated conductors.
