Hello everyone.

I removed the toilet to replace some sheetrock behind it. This is what I was greeted with after removing the wax seal and rubber grommet attached.

Now I have a question, this is my first time installing a toilet. It looks as though the flange ring was all corroded away. I went to Lowe's and Home Depot and they only carry a flange ring that is meant to be screwed to the floor. I don't have enough surrounding floor to screw it in to. Is there still existing closet flange in those photos that I have to remove first? What else can I use to mount the bolts for the toilet. I saw in one of the plumbing videos on Google that there seems to be an expanding close flange that looks like it would go inside of the piping. Might that work? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!
Chris

Yes there is an expanding flange that might fit down ino the pipe you have and then expanded to fit inside the castiron pipe. But first you would have to remove AOL of the old flange that would be in the way of the new one.

There is another flange that I like better it is one that fits on the outside of the cast iron pipe and has nuts exposed on top that you tighten to squeeze a neophrene gasket against the cast iron pipe.

To remove the old flange use a chisel and a hammer use the chisel to split the flange in a couple of places and then it can be worked up and off the cast iron.

Or you can use a drill with a steel bit of about 1/4 to 3/8's inck to drill between the flange and the iron pipe, this metal is lead and is easy to drill out and then prize out with a screwdriver.

If this info helps please let me know.

The first thing you'll have to do is remove the lead and oakum joint. To remove a poured lead and oakum joint take a 3/8" drill bit and drill a few holes down past the lead and into the oakum.. Push a screwdriver under the lead ring and lever it up. Once it's free you can began to peel the lead ring out. Now pick out the oakum and you can pull the joint apart.
Now pull the old flange out and clean then area. Now purchase a No-Caulk Inside fit cast iron closet flange, (See image). These flanges have expanding tabs to secure the flange to the closet bend. Simply follow directions. Good luck, Tom
