:) Hello
My nat. gas furnace may be from 1964 and the blower motor is loud and rattling when fan is on. How much more fuel efficient are new models that salesmen think I should buy? What makes new units energy savers? Can I make my old furnace waste less energy by somehow sealing the ducting and plenum under the house

I need to save money so I was going to try to replace the blower motor myself if is not too complicated. Where can I find instructions about replacing the motor? How can I find the right motor for my unit?

Here are some specs. I found on the furnace. Model 80CD 1064-96413 Series:150 80,000 115 Volts, 60 cycle, Bonnet cap 64,000, Less than 12 amps. I have no operating manual as the last owner of the home had none to pass on in 1980.

Thanks in advance,

Barbara G

I have no information on that model number but if it is a 1964 or there about model a new furnace should be in your future. The new units can be around 95% efficient. Your old one from that era is about 65% so it would be a smart move for you to get a new furnace. If you keep the old furnace and repair it you need to have a professional come in and check the heat exchanger since many units that old might have cracks which can cause CO poisoning.

To find a new motor remove it and take it to a local electric motor shop in your area and have them match it up. Removal and replacement is standard mechanical stuff and the wiring for the new motor will be listed right on the motor body or on a paper diagram in the box.

Now this is just me, my thoughts on the matter

I for one would not lie down to sleep in a house with a 45 year old gas furnace in opporation,, not even if I knew my life insurance was paid up in full and it promised me I would not die in my sleep
