View Full Version : How can I use an animated gif as photo on this site?

I see some users have animated photos, but the couple I've tried don't animate... like my current one... he's supposed to be doing some moves... like you see here (http://www.bakermedia.com/photos/showgallery.php/cat/12084/page/4).

Is there a trick I'm missing?

Thanks!

Hey, what's up with that? It animates if I attach it, but no animation as my user picture.

It looks like when you are uploading the avatar vBulletin is stripping out all the animation.

This link: https://www.askmehelpdesk.com/avatars/rickj.gif doesn't show a moving image either.

Try linking to the picture on another site instead of uploading it.

The image that you are trying to use is too large.
The maximum size of your custom image is 80 by 80 pixels or 19.5 KB (whichever is smaller).
Your's is 99x68 and 74Kb. ;)

When I've used animated gifs in the past I always look for ones the correct size, as I found resizing to be a very hit and miss affair.

Thanks guys. Sounds like LT and Curly's ideas are related... but seems odd, as in the past if I've tried to upload an image that is too big, I get an error message.

I see that briggsdude's animated one (https://www.askmehelpdesk.com/members/thebriggsdude.html) is within the bounds... so I'll see if I can find a neat one that's an OK size and try again.

This is strange. I get an error message "You cannot upload animated images" whether I try to upload from my machine or link to it... even when it's within the size limits.

Here's an example: 70x70 4.1kb: http://www.jackson8.com/images/animated/rj.gif

So I wonder how briggsdude, G$-450 etc. managed it?

I tried to upload an animated gif as an avatar and got the same message as you rick. Does anyone currently have one up and running as an avatar?

Yes here and here (https://www.askmehelpdesk.com/members/g4-450.html) and here (https://www.askmehelpdesk.com/members/thebriggsdude.html)for example

Even cooler one here:

(I've even tried saving the ones currently on the site and they do not work for me)

LOL could be a case of Admin not allowing animated Avatars any more, after all those examples have all been up for ages ;)

RickJ

Well, then I'll just have to put something cool or funny like this on my clipboard and just hit paste after all my posts :p

Edit: OK now I just look stupid. :D
How did you guys do that?

See Curly's post #12 and my #13.

Such fun!

(Just upload an image to this thread, then copy the url to it... but remove the part after "gif"... and enter it in the url box of your picture upload options)

I always get "You may not upload animated images." :(
I put that same URL in the top box of the Photo area.

RickJ

Well this is strange. I'll do some testing with a test user to see if I can figure out what's up.

RickJ
Jun 6, 2006, 07:06 AM
Hmmm. I wonder why the gif in your post 22 does not have an attachment box around it.

This one is done using the IMG tag https://www.askmehelpdesk.com/attachments/internet-web/997-how-can-use-animated-gif-photo-sitex27046x-simpsons-32.gif , but in this case the ATTACH tag 997

VVV This one is by using the normal attachment tool ;)

Come on Rick Keep up

What kind of avatars would be a no no on amhd

RickJ
Jun 7, 2006, 03:14 AM
Any images of bears are strictly prohibited :p :p

We don't have a list of what is not appropriate as an avatar, but assume that obscene or offesive ones would be considered so.

Thankfully, we don't have an issue with that. Since I've been here I only saw one instance of someone who put up a nude pic there... and we promptly deleted it and warned the person.

I didn't now that is a picture of me in the morning.
Just didn't want to scare anybody.

I was thinking more along the lines of this picture.
Get it she is an angel and I am the demon.
Delete picture if you need to.
At least she is not naked.

RickJ

That picture would be OK in my opinion.

Doing a little testing

1092

Always get "You may not upload animated images." whether I do a link to image or upload one. <sigh>

I did a little testing with our test user account and it seems that this hack only works with the supermods for some reason.

Admin is against them for resource conservation reasons and has "upload animated gif" turned off for everyone including supermods... none of us are sure why this "workaround" even works for us at all.
