American Standard Heritage 16 is a Dual Stage Scroll Heat pump
Air Handler is 4TEE Variable Speed.
I have resistance electric for AUX/EMER heat in the new air handler, making the system a 3H, 2C

The connections on the Air Handler and Heat Pump look like "conventional hookups" with connections labeled W1, W2, W3, Y1, Y2, etc.

My contractor is telling me that we have to run my Thermostat in conventional mode, vs. Heat Pump Mode to make the connections work.

I do not believe it-- the Thermostat should run in Heat Pump mode to harness the 3H, 2C functions and to use the other programmable goodies in the 8321 (like cycle per hour limitation and minimum compressor off time, etc).

Can anyone point me in the right direction? I think the contractor is incorrect on this one-- I want to run the fancy new thermostat in Heat Pump mode!

Read page five of this

Then just for fun read all of it.

I think you are getting a bum steer!

Thank you for your swift response! I have reviewed that publication (and others also) and I understand his confusion-- the connections from the thermostat do not match letter-for-letter to the air handler's connections, so this installation task likely requires more system knowledge than he has.

It's either time to look for a new contractor or start digging through wiring diagrams myself.

I'm sure Train/American Standard have a pub that explains connecting 3H/2C connections to this (or similar) thermostat, but I am not privy to that publication.

Any ideas for my next step?

Get a qualified contractor to do the job. If they cannot figure out how to properly wire the unit then they have no business doing the install. Makes you wonder what else they do not know.
