I want to have a ceiling fan installed in a room with no previous overhead lighting/light switch. Electrician will have to go into attic to run wires for electricity from one of several other overhead light fixtures in other rooms. If I purchase a remote controlled ceiling fan will I also have to have a new light switch added?

It depends on the unit(s) you buy, If it doesn't require the "In wall" transmitter.
If you buy the one that has a receiver that goes in the fan and is wired to a Constant hot, and uses a handheld remote(some have holder to place on wall) you can.

Short answer: no.

But I don't recommend it. Remotes and remote fans are notoriously unreliable. You're better off with a non-remote fan and a switch, or even just controlling it with it's pullchains. Heck, if you want to avoid paying an electrician, use a swag kit.
