Friends,

One doesn't make excuses or ask sympathy.

I will be 60 years old this coming January 2009, if I live that long. I experienced brain injuries as the pedestrian victim of a hit-and-run incident, on the job 02 Feb. 2007. These left me unemployable due to muscle control issues. I am presently surviving on Workers' Comp.

I just received letters from the IRS that I owe them +- 16K for years' they have no record of me filing.

Those years I was in Iraq as a contractor, protected by the Service Members' Relief Act. I am also a USMC Vietnam combat veteran.

I am to old, for surviving long enough to pay them. (Even if they harvest my organs, which nobody would buy.)

My question is this: Can the IRS attach my Workers' Comp. or SSDI? Will I be thrown out like yesterdays' garbage, to watch my wife starve?

Thank you.

The IRS can attach to your worker's come and SSDI, but they can only garnish a certain percentage, I believe.

Make sure to reply IRS letter. Do not miss the date as it amounts to consent. Call IRS on the number on the letter and find out the details of why you owe +$16K. For years you were exempt provide them copy of your passport or any other information, to support your facts.
For any other information they seek, make sure to provide them the facts.

Rsain:

If you have your pay records during your Iraq deployment, more than likely you can file the returns in question and get this monkey off your back.

When the IRS files tax returns for you, they take the most DIS-advantageous filing method to generate the highest tax. You probably qualified for the Foreign Income Exclusion for your Iraq contractor income.

If you email me with all the details (see email address below), I can provide more detailed advice.
