View Full Version : Where is the Artist in you?

firmbeliever
Mar 17, 2008, 01:01 PM
"We all take different paths in life, but no matter where we go, we take a little of each other everywhere." (Tim McGraw)

As a continuation of the Artist in you thread....

"Sometimes I look at a painting by another artist and I see a universal language that we're both trying to express. I feel that we're on the same path, that we share the same intentions, and that's inspiring to me. " (Birgit O'Connor)

"At moments we are all artists."(Arnold Bennett)

"The wonder is that artists can stimulate other artists." (Nick Farbacher)

"The artist is not a different kind of person, but every person is a different kind of artist." (Eric Gill)

All the quotes above make a ripple in my soul and they are true,I couldn't resist sharing them.

Where are you my dear Art friends?

Would love to see your Artwork.

I was wondering and waiting to see what you were going to do, firmbeliever about continuing "The Artist in you!" thread in some way or not.

Is this thread to be all-inclusive such as involving those who are in the performing, literary, craft, and theater arts, etc. That is just a short list. There is an artist of some kind in all of us...

You already know what kind of artist that I am...

Thank you!

Hi Clough,

I am not sure about All-Inclusive,it is up to you as the Art expert being an artist in so many fields :) you should decide.

My field is Art on paper or fabrics, drawing, painting, crafts in general etc,so I am less familiar with performing Arts.

Maybe you could start one in performing Arts, including Theatre, music etc

Thank you for your reply, firmbeliever and being open to some discussion concerning where we are headed after the major success of "The Artist in you!" thread.

I have many thoughts and feelings about arts of many kinds and would like to see each thread in the Art topic area be successful and an enriching thing for anyone seeking information about any kind of art.

As such, I will post more here to share with you about some of my ideas and also yours after I have had a good nights rest and can think more clearly.

Thanks!

P.S. By the way, the surprise that I have for everyone concerning "The Artist in you!" thread is almost completed and should be posted within the next few days! :) Once you have seen it, you will understand more of what I am meaning with what I will post next on this thread.

This is it so far,now I got to tell you, I like old and ratty looking things...
Anything that isn't perfect, is PERFECT to me.
So the most important thing here is what it says, it has been very special to me ever since the day I saw it in Allhearts sig. I have a few finishing touches to do to it, but I think it looks nice imperfect and plain. Hope to see some "stuff" from all of you as well!
Firmy, I know you have been busy with your cards and boxes, but it would be really great to see what you have been busy doing!;)

EDIT::::::::::::::
Getting frustrated trying to get my pic to load... LOL this may take a while or another puter... :)

Hey artlovers! I've been browsing the 'Artist in you' threads and wow is there some talent there huh? I was wondering, as I am not too familiar with adding pics, what size do they need to be? At the moment they're all 1920x2560 or 1.60mb. Is this too big?

Yes, that's too big. But, we do have people here who can help you to learn how to re-size your images so that you can post them on this site.

Hey there, giving a little unsolicited help here but when I was learning to post images, I sure did appreciate those who jumped right in to help me. If you have scanned your work or have photo images saved to a file folder, make sure they are saved as .jpg files and just open them each up in a photo program you have, just left click once to select image, then right click and it will give you the options of programs. Most photo programs have at the top either Image or Edit where you can get drop down box and it will say Resize. Choose pixels and the largest you can post on this site is 750 pixels. I usually make mine 450, length or width, which ever is largest. 600 actually shows up much better. Just preference. Once you have resized it, don't forget to go up to file and "Save As" and just add the word resized at the end of title, making sure at the bottom it says .jpg

Once you save it that way, using "Save As", you now have the original in your file as well as the newly sized image. Then when you post, select "Go Advanced", it gives you the option then to browse to find your image and attach it and you can also type in a description or comments as usual to post. I have a longer version of instructions if this is not clear enough. I am anxious to see images you have to share. :p

Well, FINALLY got all the dramas sorted with my images. Thanks for the advice Jrebel, I don't appear to have any option for resizing once the image has been right-clicked so eventually (with a little help from a more PC savvy other half) I realised that it can be done by opening the image in paint, then clicking on the image icon there. Modern technology aye! Hrrumph.

Aaanywho, I have always been a doodler and probably always will be. I'm a fan of the pencil but have been playing with pastels a bit since an artcourse I did a year ago.
You can see from this "Zeus" portrait where the light glares I need to brush up on my overcorrecting. Something my tutor gave me stick about... "you don't need to use a rubber or putty!" Lol. Sorry Mehrdad, guess I didn't listen!

Once I take photos of my other work, I'll upload some of them too. Hope someone likes 'em anyway and please give some critique. Keep up the great work guys!

It clucked, laid

A fantastic line from a fantastic poet.
But art is an irrelevance I completely love.

Here's a few things I've made. None of them recent unfortunately.

I love this image of "Zeus". I took the liberty of lightening it up just a bit so that I could see more of the detail of the face. I am posting it. I hope that is okay. It is just a wonderful piece. Thank you for sharing it. If you want me to delete my post of it lightened I will but it just has so much to offer. Perhaps it was just dark on my computer screen. I would love seeing more of your work. Please explain more about the "rubber and putty". Is this a mixed medium piece. I am a bit confused. Is this pencil and pastel?

That was clever. Never thought of lightening it, thanks! A rubber (in my neck of the woods) is an eraser and the putty is just a type of eraser well suited to pencil and charcoal. I prefer it the most other erasers as it leaves no 'crumbs' when applied and can be shaped into a sharp tip for small areas, but my tutor doesn't like to use them at all especially as he's so skilled but the drawing surface can be damaged too if correcting is overdone. I personally like the effect they can create if used in the right way and well, I have a long way to go to be as skilled as him lol! The whole drawing was done in pencil, with the exception of the ball, which was pastel.

Well new friend, it wouldn't allow me to "Rate the Answer" since I just did earlier on one of your posts. I was just going to say that I hope you realize how much talent you do have.

I use a "Design Kneaded Rubber" which I imagine is what you are describing. You use it to give a clean area to use, doesn't leave any traces of 'crumbs' and is great for highlighting by way of removing graphite already applied to an area. I agree with you that using this gives a great effect if used properly.

I am anxious to view other art works you might want to share. I would enjoy knowing also if you do this professionally on any level, art shows, do commission work, or take classes and do these pieces just for gifts.

It is just exciting seeing this great work. We all need inspiration and you have inspired me! Thank you.

Hi all, been having problems with my internet, hence the reason for my absence. Nice to hear my work is putting a positive vibe out there. Have been really busy lately so still don't have pics available of other work but won't forget!
I started doing the odd drawing for friends a long time ago, then thought I'd have a go at turning it into a business on the sideline which was OK for a while but with family pressures etc I slowed it right down to just a hobbie again.
Anyway, will see you all soon guys, chow for now. :)

Thanks Jrebel and others for nice comments. I actually use Fabriano paper which is white (I had my camera set wrong and it didn't compensate for the tungsten light)... should have used a sepia coloured paper though huh, does suit the era of the photo right?:D
They are both pencil as I'm still not too comfortable with charcoal yet. I find it more difficult to use than pencil. Is there anyone out there who has some charcoal art to share?

I am still enthralled with the drawing of your great grandfather. The eyes follow the viewer, you have a soft touch which I do not possess but so enjoy viewing work of those who do. I haven't worked in charcoal since college years. My main medium is pencil, Design Ebony Jet Black #14420 and #6325.

Is Fabriano paper a watercolor paper for watercolor, charcoal and pencil? Wondering if that is just a brand name? I loved the sepia look. I just assumed the paper was sepia in color. It really has such a nice mood to it, viewing it in sepia. Sepia always warms up a drawing.

Please post more of your work. :p

I totally agree! :) Art is something that encompasses a number of areas or genres, if you will - music, drama, crafts, theater, dance, visual and performing arts of various kinds, etc. My main art is music, but I also do art in a number of other areas and genres...

As such, you might want to wait to post something that is audible until I start a central artist thread for artists of all types. That "tree" could then have many "branches..." Then, woven together...

But, at the same time, that does not preclude you posting something audible on a thread such as this. Artwork of any kind, as far as I am concerned, could be posted on multiple threads. That way, that Art topic area could be the most complete and very much like an art encyclopedia, indexed, referenced, etc. for years to come!

I too, would appreciate knowing if what you have is that which you have created yourself.

Thanks!

This is interesting, Sean. I would appreciate you sharing with us as to why you think that "music is the most beautiful thing form of art..." It's interesting to me, that you have that perspective, because you are someone who works so much producing those things that are in the visual arts. Please do share.

I too, do miss the intimacy of sharing of our arts like we used to do! :)

Dear musicians,
I wrote this because so many times when I have been going about my day, walking my dogs, driving down a street or going in a shop. I hear the music of someone and think how beautiful. I stop and savior it for a moment, usually never knowing where it comes from. Maybe to you the musician you are just practicing, passing time or performing. Know this, even if just, for a small fleeting moment you helped someone have a nicer day.

Unseen
I may not know where you are,
Invisible, coming to me through the thin air.
The gentle, rhythmic sound of your voice,
Lulling me peacefully as I go about my day.

I hear you, unseen

I hear your instruments
In perfect tune and harmony.
Maybe you are a star, a singer in a bar,
The girl down the street, or a member in a choir
I hear you, unseen

I don't know who you are ,to me it matters not, as I go about my day.
In my yard, pulling weeds, planting flowers or
Sitting on my porch rocking back forth.

I hear you, unseen

When I throw open my windows on a warm breezy day,
To clean my house and chase the gloom away.

I hear you, unseen.

Driving down the street at a stop sign,
The strains of music coming from somewhere.

I hear you, unseen

To you your just practicing or getting ready for a show,
But the joy you are giving me, you probably will never know.
We may have seen each other or not,
I may never attend your show or meet you.

But as I hear you, unseen.
I thank you, unheard.
Geri

Clough, in answer to your question, music has always touched me and influenced me far more than visual arts. It is what I cry to, and it is always playing, as I rest, while I do art, when I am on a computer, while I read, etc, I cannot live without music, music just to me expresses so much more and touches so much deeper into the soul than visual art, I could live without my eyes, without any sense, except my hearing, without music, I would wither and die. One of my greatest regrets in life is that I have never had a voice or a talent for singing. I am currently learning to play guitar, and I want to learn piano, because I cry whenever I hear sad piano being played.

jrebel7

As a performing musician in Greenville, SC, I want you to know that what you wrote here means more to me than I can express. It's everything I ever wanted someone to stop and say to me, wether sitting on my steps picking acoustic or playing a show downtown.
Thank you so much.

More people feel this way (the way Cal expressed so eloquently) than you know. We express a lot of times on this site, the visual arts we are involved in and we are able to put an image on the site that one can view but perhaps do not include the other types of art often enough although a few of us have tried to have the art threads to be all inclusive of all forms of art. It is good to also have threads that are subject or art specific to address questions in more detail but having been one who attempted "violin, guitar, ukele, piano and singing", and enjoyed it but never excelled in any of them, I would love to hear more of what inspires performing aritists, what drives you to excel? What do you go through emotionally when you are in front of people performing your art, whether it is music, acting, etc. Some, like myself, are content to paint or draw and not be in front of people but generally while we are creating our art, we are listening and being moved by music being played in the background. From the beginning of time, beat of music, rhythm and movement has been at the very core of our being. Even though I do not perform, how I admire and respect those who do. Please share your background with us and whatever you feel free to share with us regarding your music.

I sign for the deaf and what so many people miss is that the deaf can feel the beat of the music, even though they do not "hear with the ears" the music, they hear the music in their hearts. They feel the vibrations, the variations of vibrations, the intensity of vibrations sometimes by placing their hand on the piano or guitar, or just feel it through the floor. Music is a ministering balm. My son played the guitar and sang to his children while his wife was pregnant with them. When they would get fussy when they were babies, he would get the guitar out and play like he did then when they were still in the womb and they would immediately calm down. One day, my precious daughter-in-law (and one of my best friends in life) was at home with the baby and he got fussy and she was getting nervous being a new mother and my son was a work. She knows nothing about music in terms of playing music but got my son's guitar out and simply strummed, did not play chords, simply strummed and the baby became calm. Isn't that just amazing? It is to me!

My heart ached while I was writing this. It is my hope that people understand the plight that so many dogs face, through no fault of their own.

What a puppy knows

Before you click that chain,
I may never be the same.

I'm cute and cuddly,
And sometimes puddly.

Right now I'm small and don't know it all.
Except what my mama told me about my Grandpa.

Here is the mistake his owner did make.
I hope you will not want to do the same, for my sake.

Mistake some might say, he gave that old dog a place to lay
And good food to eat everyday.

Yes mistakes, chained dogs can't greet you at the door,
They can't lie by your feet on the floor.

Their life for you they would trade any day.
How could they, if a chain, is where they must stay.

If that is your intention for me
Just leave me be.

I see a lady that will love me
And tell my grandpa's story.

Dog on a chain

On this chain is my home.
Is this chain where I belong?

My master put me here many years ago.
Just how many, I don't know.

Hes never happy when he visits, I feel so alone.
If it will please him I'll find a new home.

Jumping to greet him only makes him yell.
Sometimes I get a swift kick to the tail.

Where did I fail you, where did I go wrong?
Please tell me, I so want to belong.

Days turn into cold lonely nights.
Nights into days, I'm losing my sight.

My old eyes are yellow and covered in haze.
My muzzle is scattered, with many shades of grays.

But never the less I'd be willing to play
And give you my love the rest of my days.

Open your eyes dear one, awaiting you is a rainbow
Why you had to endure this only your master knows.

Was it to teach?
To many, I can make sure your story will reach.

Now you are free to romp and play
And I believe to come back someday.

I remember how I was afraid to let him go on the first day of school, esp given his heatlh problems, but you know everything has worked out beautifully. Yesterday he landed 2 jobs in one day one making 7 dollars a hour and all the free golf he can play (he is over the moon)and the other one pays 19.50 per hour, both part time until college this fall.
It is like sunshine follows him or better he follows it, his smile is like a bright ray.

Oh Bushg, I remember those days when my little ones graduated and life changed. We want it to but then we don't at the same time. You have much to be proud of in your son. He is indeed blessed, especially with you as his mother. You hang in there! I know as you reflect how afraid you were that first day of school for him, you may feel some of the same pangs at this time. Just part of the loving and letting them grow up.

I asked a lady one time if it was difficult for her when her daughter moved from home. She said rather rudely, "Well, I didn't raise her to keep her." To which I replied, "Well, I did mine!" I laughed, she laughed. It was painful for me, the letting go, step by step even now as they have matured into wonderful parents of their own children.

Just encapsulate the moment and know it will always be your moment to keep and treasure in your heart. I know you are so proud of him. I am proud of him for you! :)

My heart ached while I was writing this. It is my hope that people understand the plight that so many dogs face, thru no fault of their own.

What a puppy knows

Before you click that chain,
I may never be the same.

I’m cute and cuddly,
and sometimes puddly.

Right now I’m small and don’t know it all.
Except what my mama told me about my Grandpa.

Here is the mistake his owner did make.
I hope you will not want to do the same, for my sake.

Mistake some might say, he gave that old dog a place to lay
and good food to eat everyday.

Yes mistakes, chained dogs can’t greet you at the door,
they can’t lie by your feet on the floor.

I have been visiting this thread for a while... just looking and reading. Today, I am impelled to write in here. I am weeping right along with you bushg. I can feel the emotions so deep in these.

Thank you all, I just want anyone that reads this to think about chained dogs even though it is painful and just maybe spread the word when they have a chance. Not everyone realizes that animals have feelings to.

Graduation is over and I did not shed a tear. Then we took him out to his favorite dinner, we had such a good time. It was not as emotional as when the scholarships and awards were given out. Most of the scholarships were given out to honor a relative that had died. No one had dry eyes that day.

***********

also hi there jrebel and mopar et al,
When sketching, what pencils and paper do you use? You get such a clean finish to your work, whereas mine is always a bit smudged etc. Or maybe the question should be, how do you keep your work so clean?

Hey Frangi! I normally use Faber-castell lead pencils HB - 8B, depending on the subject. The softer the pencil the easier to smudge - HB hard, 8B very soft. I like to use Fabriano brand paper 50% cotton (hotpress). That was for Jrebel too sorry I forgot to reply to one of her previous posts.
Maybe the smudging comes from your hand rubbing the drawing as you sketch? Just a thought... I used to do that a lot till I learnt to rest my hand on a piece of clean paper/tissue and sometimes spray each finished portion with fixative before carrying on. I think maybe the spraying works better with charcoal though. (Am I making any sense?)
I keep my work clean by firstly spraying the finished piece then if storing I simply place it between 2 pieces of paper in my art folder or sellotape a waxcoated light paper over the work. Just make sure the sellotape is acid-free, and is near the edges. :)

Jrebel those leaves are truly amazing! Ingenious! If I could I would rate you a green dot! Will you settle for a couple of smileys? :) :)

Thank you so much for those lovely comments everyone!

Surprisingly enough, I took this photo from my phone camera and it didn't come out bad at all. This portrait is hanging on my apartment wall.

jrebel7: This took me a couple of months to do. I was so excited with how good it came out. I didn't work from a photo at all. I used a miror and a lamp (to get the shading effects). I will most definitely post some more of my artwork later on today.

I have been drawing since I was a little girl. Actually it runs in the family. I have 3 sisters that can draw equally as good. My mother was the basis for this talent. She would always give my sisters and I paper and a pencil.

Again, thank you everyone!

WOW, I remember our hometown Anabell, she lived at the Alaska Zoo for years. The Alaska Zoo is kind of hokey at least it was when I was a kid and as I grew up I came to appreciate it more. Anyway, Anabell was the elephant that when I was a small child around 3 and 4 I knew who people were talking about when they said her name... I sort of grew up with her and she painted pictures as well. She was a sweet sweet soul. Thanks for sharing! It brought back some great memories!

He there!

I was asked by my daughter and her husband to paint a window they found in their attic. They did not want the window painted, just left as it was found (my daughter likes the distressed look but this just looked old and marked to me) but the window panes painted. LOL They didn't have a clue what they wanted on it. I did this in record time, thinking that they would see it and decide they wanted different colors or subject matter and I would be repainting but to my surprise they loved it and hung it on their wall in their den and have now purchased another house and it hangs in their den (which I also posted a photo of where it hangs). I must admit, it got my creative juices flowing and my son-in-law has now located more windows for me to paint for the art show in the fall. I have a better idea now that I did this one of how I want to do it and more of what I would like to achieve. I have been missing seeing everyone's art so am hoping this will remind you to post more of your work. I miss it much. I am putting my pencil drawing on hold except for commission pieces for now.

Oh, glad so many of you enjoyed the link to the "Elephant Painting". That was amazing!!

Jrebel, it is so lovely and kind of reminds me of a Starry Night at the top and at the bottom... the artist that painted his wife's flower gardens. ( sorry I can't think of his name ) Monet.

In my area people mostly save the windows with the 12 smaller panes... I have seen them in flower shops, used as picture frames, with vines hanging around them or as room dividers.
That is one of the things I have always wanted... now you have renewed my determination to get one.

They are always set out in the garbage around here for the taking... I live in a community where the homes were built from the 1800's to the 1960's.

I would like to see one where lacy curtains were painted on the window and a cats lying stretched out on the windowsill or sitting up right waiting for someone to come home.

I have a photo that I took similar to that but it was my dog, lying on the back of the couch wistfully looking out the window...

Please post more when time permits, You know I get so excited over some things I tend to ramble...

It amazes me when people do this and with old doors also.
We even have a resue center and you can go there and get just about anything old your heart desires at a low price.
I see entire houses of windows thrown out I am talking 13 or more... It hurts me to see them going in the landfill. Some are even the old wavy glass. I have a few wavy ones on my second floor.

Starty and Bushg, thank you so much for your kind words. Sounds like maybe the two of you may have been sparked a little toward doing more art work. Please do post if you do. I love the idea of the lace curtains and kitten.

I am going to be trying reverse painting which is a bit difficult for me as I have done it on plates I have painted but not window panes. Should be a challenge!

Thanks again and good to see you on here!

I'm going out this evening in the neighbor and see if anyone in the neighborhood has new windows.. :) Meaning I will be garbage picking.

Sounds like a plan!! A fun plan at that!! :p

There is an acrylic type paint in small bottles called "Glossies" that are specifically for glass but I have used plain craft acrylics on plates and glasses and had good results. I process them in the oven but of course, couldn't do a window. LOL I seal it with Polycrylic, two coats. They have it at Wal-mart. I like high gloss but they have it in satin and flat I think also. Can't remember for sure. I am sure oils would give a really nice finish but I don't work with oils anymore because of allergies. I also like the drying time on acrylics and I work fast so blending is not a problem with acrylics.

The main thing is, have a blast!!! ;) If you are painting on the front side, find a picture you love and tape it to the back of the glass. Perfect pattern to use!! :p Keep us posted and post image of your work. Hopefully before too long, I will lhave more. Mother is still in Nursing Home and they think she had a light stroke so CAT Scan on Friday. We are there to help her with meals daily so art work has sort of been put on back burner. Start what a good idea... a way to save two old pieces.
I have a very old home interior picture that looks like a window and it has different scenes in it, country ones. If I can find one on eBay I will post it. I want to hang it in my kitchen to look at while I have breakfeast... because I do not have a good view of the outside... if my carpetner husband ever gets the kitchen completed.
When he sells this last house that he is working on... I may celebrate and get a digital camera... so I can post.

I would love to go to an old part of down town and take some pictures of somw walls under a train trestle where some artist went and did a mural of different types of ocean creatures with glass beads and brokens glass and grouted them... Whats that called... oh yeah mosaic. Very beautiful... these are free standing walls not sure what they were intended for but it is close to the industrial part that has turned into swanky office spaces.
I found a picture of one of the murals... but not the fish, this doesn't give justice, to the beauty of it.Art motivates teens (http://www.enquirer.com/editions/2004/10/02/loc_loc3mural.html)

I loved the links! They were great. I found it interesting because in our town, they have huge guitars where individual artists have painted them and they are on street corners, parks, etc. In the town where my daughter lives, they have painted huge Penquins. So it was really fun seeing the pigs. Thanks for posting that. I loved it.

Our local library, once a year has an auction of wooden chairs that have been painted by local artists. I always think I am going to do that then I get side-tracked. They are beautiful. Some so fanciful, some tell stories, some look like Alice in Wonderland characters, some just wild and whimsically designed. Just gorgeous.

bushg
Jun 25, 2008, 10:58 PM
My daughter would love the penguins. I would like to see them all. The guitars remind me of how country folk paint scenes on old saws, blades and shovels. Maybe you can do one of those chairs just for yourself and post it on here... are they children's chairs or regular table chairs?

Glad you liked the pigs, in a burb of cincy they have huge painted vases with flowers planted in them... very swanky town... with a square and shops everywhere, very nice place to visit.
Another village has painted squirrels with different park scenes, I found those when I was looking for the pigs... so I will be going to look at those. Also ky is not too far and they have painted horses... I believe life size.

We have a really bad side of town kind of run down and a group of artist have taken over an abandoned police sub station and turned it into a artist café... The Speckeled Bird Café... My daughter and I plan on having lunch there this summer... how cute, can't wait.

They have also taken part of a huge and very old Catholic church and turned it into an art gallery... I can't wait to visit it. Benches in the court yard and flowers, children running and playing the neighborhood is going up. It is so amazing that there is a lot of druggies and fighting and such but they never bother that place... I think maybe they see it as a sign of hope and inspiration.

I think art and gardening is so important for a community and sadly those are the first things to go in a crunch. Plus the art will someday be used to tell the history of the neighborhood. I ramble so I will shut up... :D

jrebel7
Jun 25, 2008, 11:34 PM
Bg, the chairs are regular size wooden chairs, all shapes, styles, etc. but older styles mostly. You can get them at stores around as new chairs but the ones I would be interested in are the old ones but then if they were that old, I would want to just refinish them and not paint them.. Go figure! LOL

I would love to have an art area in our town. We have an Artist Guild but it is kind of "old school". I am not much of a joiner but would love to organize a café, of course, we would have to call Starty in on it for the baking!! LOL I am not a kitchen person at all. Ride my cycle, do my art, play with grandbabies and the kitchen is there when I have to use it but I adore people who love to cook or bake or sew. You have heard my saying by now I am sure, "If you can glue it, I can do it!" but if it is thread, forget it! I enjoy decorating cakes for special occasions however or making candy or cookies. Have you seen the little hamburger looking cookies made from vanilla wafers?? If not and I can find a photo, I will post here. I use a mint for the meat, coconut colored green for the lettuce, etc. Fun.

The 'Speckled Bird Cafe' sounds like a neat place to go. Maybe I can someday! Hope so.

No but I want to see them and eat them.:p

My daughter and I was making cup cakes late one night for her softball bake sale... We only had white icing and no food coloring... so I came up with an idea to use a little orange, green, and red Kool Aid for the icing that we were using to make flowers, leaves, basket weave etc... She is in high school and the kids loved it, requested more for the next day... they were sweet and sour cupcakes... But I'm not the greastes baker... I never seem to have all the ingredients on hand.
Yet I can sew a little I made all of my curtains, pillows and bench seat covers as well as the coverings for my out door furniture. Sewing a straight line is not to hard.

Thanks firm... I will see if my daughter will make me some... she and her grandmother get together and bake all of the time. Their quite artsy in that department.
When we work together we butt heads... can't have 2 bosses in one kitchen... She made me let her be in charge of her bake sale cookies and it broke my heart... she would only let me decorate a few because she said I wuold labor to long and we would still be there come morning. Oh, another good memory..

I just was thinking to myself, I should really take the time to get out of my car and take some pics and look around! It is in a part of town where its kind of wishy washy, but I feel as safe there as I do in my own home now a days! I work down there, so some of the people I know who draw or "spray" down there!;) Very cool souls some of them!

Starty, here you go... I hope I sized these like you would have wanted them to be. I just love these.

Hey all, I have a couple of beautiful "STARTY CREATIONS" to share with you!

Starty, I am posting the originals but did crop out part of the door. I am also posting the first one twice, the first is the original and the second one of that one is where I tried to remove the glare but was concerned I might have compromised the piece so wanted the original here for sure!

Start/jrebel that is absolutely beautiful. I know how tiny those stiches are, you can even tell on the computer. I love the natural/old look of the window, it brings out the orange, yellow, creams of the quilt it also lends to the age of the quilt.

I like the glare to me it signifies homeiness... you can see the hanging light and what appears to be a window... I'm sure this reflection is seen everyday by someone in your home... it goes well, very fitting. To me it says I live here.

It would be just as pretty painted white... then it would look like a mosaic. The whiteness of the doors on each sides make me believe this.

Very beautiful thanks for posting it... I know I am finding me a window...

You know bushg, you could use the panes and hang a pic from the top of each pane... a old window some pictures and a few tacks would do the trick, I plan on doing this for my Mother in law for Christmas this year... :)
And thank you, it is homey here...

I saw an old french door used for different photos of someone's family... not sure how they got it to stand... I know they had a window like yours suspended not too far from it by chains. It was in a really outdoorsy, earthy living room.

You know start that is a good idea... I could change them depending upon on the season... I wanted to buy a picture clock that you changed out the picture depending on the season but was to expensive... actually I have a huge spot on each side of my fire place that has deer heads on each side and I think hubby has grown tired of them so I am thinking that those frames would be a perfect spot for the deer. My Dears, deer can go to the hall... haha

Hey JRebel, the painting in your window reminds me so much of my mother's style of painting. Awesome work! We don't get much of that kind of craftiwork over here, maybe you've started something of a trend... I'm quite inspired! How do you hang them? They must be quite heavy.

I am tickled that you enjoyed seeing the window!! Makes me anxious to do more. I have two in the process. WOW! Trendsetter!! I love it. You are so kind!

The windows are quite heavy. There are several options when hanging them. I will be displaying these at an art show in the fall, using eyelets or eyehooks, not sure what they are called, they have a closed circle with a part of it that screws into the wood and has a hinge between the circle and the screw part so they circle part lays sort of flat against the back of the window. With heavier windows, I would use a small chain available at a local hardware store but with lighter weight ones, would just get heavy gauge wire from local craft store, place each end through the circle and then wind it several times toward the center so it doesn't slip. We built a display using lattice work, hinged to fold forward and so I need a one point hanging point. I use "S" shaped hooks but were made from a form to fit over the lattice work since it is a little thick.

I really am getting excited about the windows. I have worked in pencils for so long, and love them and feel they are my forte but this will be a nice change and then return to the pencils. If you do a window, please post so we can all enjoy it!! :p I am delighted always to see your post. Hoping you will post more work soon! It inspires everyone!

EDIT: I edited the description of the hardware that screws into the wood, it has a hinge.

Have you seen the little hamburger looking cookies made from vanilla wafers??? If not and I can find a photo, I will post here. I use a mint for the meat, coconut colored green for the lettuce, etc. Fun.

No but I want to see them and eat them.:p

My daughter and I was making cup cakes late one night for her softball bake sale... We only had white icing and no food coloring...so I came up with an idea to use a little orange, green, and red kool aid for the icing that we were using to make flowers, leaves, basket weave etc... She is in highschool and the kids loved it, requested more for the next day...they were sweet and sour cupcakes...But I'm not the greastes baker...I never seem to have all the ingredients on hand.
Yet I can sew a little I made all of my curtains, pillows and bench seat covers as well as the coverings for my out door furniture. Sewing a straight line is not to hard.

Bg, you are quite inventive using Kool Aid for the icing color. Firmy posted a terrific link but since we had visited about the cookies and I finally found my photo of the ones I made, thought I would post it. They differ a little from the link from Firmy but her link brought up some great ideas I had not thought of for pickles, etc. I used the following:

Vanilla Wafers - as the bun
Sesame Seeds - moisten the top of Vanilla wafer cookie and sprinkle seeds on top
Chocolate Mint Cookie (thin)
Coconut - with green food coloring for the lettuce
I just mixed up the icing I use when I decorate cakes and colored part of it red for the ketchup and yellow for the mustard and or cheese (cheese burger!)

I went a little overboard with the sesame seeds but I am sure I had 7 other projects going at the time and hurried too much. The sliced gum drops for pickles that firmy's link suggested was just terrific. Thanks Firmy! You are a top researcher and much appreciated!

Bg, the main reason for posting the art besides sharing what we do as artists is to inspire and help people to view life "out the box" at times. Whether you share art pieces you have done or posted links of other's art, to me you are still inspiring others. Just being a good researcher and finding these wonderful links is an art, in and of itself. Not all people are able to find such fun links to share.

I visited your new thread and enjoyed it very much. But I have enjoyed everyone's posts on this one also. Please don't feel guilty for sharing with us. I always enjoy your posts! :p

You guys working on anything? All I am working on is summer fun. I got to tell you guys a little something, I thought ohhhh ART... right when this happened.
We were outside finishing up the "sparklers" from fourth of July and we were walking in... I bent down and there he was a pretty Dragon Fly. I said boys look, isn't he beautiful?
I wanted to go and get the camera right away but he got startled and then I said Jett, did he touch you when he flew away? I asked one more time and when he turned around I could see why he wasn't speaking... the DragonFly landed right smack dab in the middle of his lips... He stayed there for more than 30 or 40 seconds! Ohhhhh I wanted a picture of that so bad. But he flew away and then we all just laughed in astonishment... THAT WAS COOL! ;) Hope you all are having a great summer. Hugs to you too Cal!

Yes, I am sure it was done through the computer. Not sure how. It was just neat to me to see it begin as a spine and skull, bones, then muscle, then flesh then clothes. There were a few moments in there I was not sure this would be appropriate to show here but then as it kept developing, it just showed a lot of creativity, I thought, on the part of the person doing it.

I have a friend who does computer art who shows at the art show I do in Oct. but his is on canvas, just done on photo shop type program but looks like hand painted, nothing with movement. His computer art sales better than a lot of the "fine art" pieces. They are really beautiful.

The creativity in some people just astounds me. Hope this was okay to share here even though it had it's moments. LOL :o :o :o

I agree, looked like the artist did have a number of ideas running through his/her mind before the finished product.

Yep, it took some interesting directions at times, didn't it? I have been working on paintings that went through many changes before arriving at what I truly wanted to present.

Fascinated me though to see the spine, skull and the development from that point, kept me guessing a lot to the end. :p

jrebel7, who do many types of art, also does pencil drawings and sells them. I'm sure that she could give you a clue as to how much you might be able to sell yours that you produce that you would like to sell.

One thing that I would like to caution you about though, is that if you are indeed copying images from another source, and then selling what you have produced, there might be possible copyright issues there, even though what you have produced are not are exact replicas of the images.

I have been in love with the Patriots for a very long time now...
But
Since I live with a Seahawks fan, I have been a big supporter of them too, I even have a stupid coin purse that I hold my money in my purse with.
Either way, if I can just say something that no other person normally says, I have no problem rooting for either team, if they make a great play I clap my hands or yell out. I can't help but to think how amazing these players are. It doesn't really matter what team it is, I just really like a good game. On the other hand, I would hate to see the Pats loose or the Hawks! Nice work again, sure talent there in your artwork!

Hi there!
Below is a link that might get you started on researching copyright law.

Copyright information (http://library.thinkquest.org/J001570/Copyrightinfo.html)

While I was at the Met in New York, there were artists set up on the floor, copying the Master Artist's famous work. As long as they did not use the exact size of canvas that the original painting was painted on, the piece was considered their own work.

A lot of artist's view a photo and work from that but the art creation is a different medium, size, and each artist has their own style so it is not a "COPY" of the original. You would not be allowed by law to have reprints of the photograph made and sell them but your rendition of the photo is your own.

I was commissioned to do a drawing of a photograph that had been in a Newspaper in another state. I was going to do a write up after posting on my web site so called the newspaper to see what was legal for me to use from their article. The gal told me I could not copy it word for word, nor could I use any details that would not have been public knowledge at the onset of the story but I could use information such as city, state, general description of incident and not be in breech of copyright. There was no problem with my using their photograph from the newspaper.

I know this does not answer your question of copyright but hope it helps in some way. You have an amazing talent, that hopefully you will develop and hope you won't let the concern of copyright be a stumbling block but instead research a bit more, call an attorney if there is a series of drawings you are wanting to do of sports players, for example, from photographs and usually attorneys will give a free on phone consultation of general information if it is not lengthy.

I am not encouraging you to just not worry about the issues of copyright, but goodness, with such talent, check it out with an attorney so will know your boundaries legally then go full steam ahead. :)

I don't know how much information the following link would be to you but looks like might be worth a try to get you started on getting more comfortable regarding selling your art work done by looking at a photograph that probably is copyrighted. Much success to you in finding information and please post more of your work.

Get a Copyright - LegalZoom (http://www.legalzoom.com/sem/get-a-copyright.html?WT.srch=1&se=google&q=copyright+art+work&refcd=GO323573s_copyright_art_work&tsacr=GO1154044537&gclid=CNX6yuiux5QCFQOfxgodTioSJA)

jrebel7 - thanks for the info. That was basically my understanding of drawing from photos, but to be safe I've been flying a bit under the radar (like going into bars andm after checking w/ bartender, peddling to patrons - mostly during football season <G>) I'll check those sites - couldn't before because of no access. I donated a few ftbl pics and some wildlife watercolors to my lake club's women's club for them to try and sell. They occasionally show up on e-bay (and she was going to try another similar site too). Shouldn't be a problem legally since I didn't make any money. (Hope)

Thanks again for the encouragement. Now if I can only get it together to get a scanner. The one I used on my old 386 wouldn't even load on W95...

I understand why you felt the need to fly under the radar, so to speak! :p

I will share with you what I do. It may not be something you desire but never hurts to hear new ideas or new ways of getting your art "out there". OK, you are from the states, correct? Try to find a printer that does Giclee prints. It is the closest print that you will find to your original. The inks are archival inks, last 100 years, printed on acid free paper, like watercolor paper or handmade paper. I go to my printer with my original piece, unmatted, unframed, sealed with a spray sealer, he then scans the piece and burns me a CD with a .tif and .jpg file image. He keeps the image under my file on his computer so anytime I need prints I can just e-mail or call and tell him how many, what size, if I want black and white or sepia or color, etc. I have small, large, medium prints made of the same piece, note cards with my work on them, book marks with my work on them. He even printed out a portfolio sheet with thumbnail (a little larger than) print of each piece. I had him print out black and whites on one sheet and color on another. They can then be laminated. In order to get into a very specific show I had to produce either my work or a portfolio. My daughter picked up my two sheets, took them, they were judged and I was accepted the first year I applied. If a person gets in to this show, they can pretty much show at any show in the area with out going through all the acceptance stuff. I have a lot of my black and white drawings printed out in Sepia. Makes the piece come alive a little bit, more warmth. When I get the prints I have ordered at a later time, I spray each one with a sealer (not notecards) and let them dry before putting each in a clear bag with a seal. If I am not framing a piece, then I go to local Hobby Store and have them cut a piece of cardboard, just an inch or so larger than the piece with or without mat, purchase roll of shrink wrap. I tape it with packaging tape all around on the back side then use a blow dryer and it shrinks and no wrinkles, piece is protected, nice, clean, neat, ready to sell. The beauty of having a printer do your work like this is that he can do the prints, usually within a day or two so you don't have a lot invested in inventory and don't have to store a lot of inventory.

I won't go on... but hope I have given you some info you can use! :)

Hi there!

I do mainly commission work. I use to do a few art shows a year but have cut it down to one a year that I mentioned in earlier post since it is the "Big Daddy" of them all. I display some of my work, have prints, cards, bookmarks but also have a web site. I only have my pencils on it now. My son is designing it and he is one busy little guy so progress is slow but sure!!

I enjoy the commission work more than any of the other. The others you mentioned in your post are amazing artists. I hope they see your post soon and can also share their experience with you! :)

The image is one of my displays. I have two different types, depending on where I display.

To answer your question in the last sentence, I always tell people that I do my drawings for the enjoyment of it. If they sell, it is just icing on the cake. I have already received joy from just creating the piece! (Don't get me wrong, cash is nice and rewarding. It sort of validates me as an artist in the public eye but I would do the pieces whether they sell or not. People tell me to draw what sells in this area. I tell them, I draw what moves me and inspires me. If it sells... as I say... icing!

I am not good at marketing, don't have a drive to do it. It isn't my goal. Some of the other artists mentioned will have wonderful things to share with you.

I also went to a local gift store and approached the owner about carrying a line of my note cards!! She said yes!! Always open doors somewhere! LOL

BG, I just read a link today stating an artist should never explain an art piece. I understood what they were saying but I have to say that some art pieces do stand best with no explanation but allow the viewer to draw their own conclusion but hope you feel it is OK for me to share a bit about the drawing you mentioned, the dog and the girl. The piece is called, "Ultimate Trust". The dog had been tied to a stop sign with a rope and shot in the upper part of the nose with a .22 bullet. The dog chewed it's way loose, crawled to a dry creek bed and fell in. Duncan was discovered and taken to a Veterinarian Clinic. I was contacted to do a commission drawing of one of the workers at the clinic and Duncan. The story hit the front page of the paper where the people live that commissioned it. The man's wife worked at the clinic. Offers came from all over the place to adopt Duncan, money poured in to pay for Duncan's care. Duncan is now alive and well!! When I create a piece, I sometimes write a little one page fictional story about it or just give my thoughts on the piece. I named it "Ultimate Trust" because I know that little precious dog, had to relearn to trust and the employees at the clinic surely instilled that trust back into that dog. When animals or people are hurt, the physical scars heal fairly quickly for the most part but sometimes, the injuries to the spirit take more time. I felt that the look on Duncan's face expressed "Ultimate Trust". Thank you for sharing that you liked it.

Jrebel look at his eyes they show trust not only that but the way he allows her to hold him. That makes me cry... I know that look because, I have animals that have that same look... they also let out a sigh a special sigh.. so often one of my dogs will lay their head on my lap, across my leg or across the top of my feet and let out that "sigh" like they know they are safe, they are home and will never be hurt or hungry again.
To me that look and sigh is better than a wag of a tail any day.. but hey I like wags too... ok now mine are going on their 3rd walk of the day... all of this sappy dog talk.

Jrebel look at his eyes they show trust not only thta but the way he allows her to hold him. That makes me cry....I know that look because, I have animals that have that same look....they also let out a sigh a special sigh..so often one of my dogs will lay their head on my lap, across my leg or across the top of my feet and let out that "sigh" like they know they are safe, they are home and will never be hurt or hungry again.
To me that look and sigh is better than a wag of a tail any day..but hey I like wags too....ok now mine are going on their 3rd walk of the day....all of this sappy dog talk.

BG, you have such a loving heart! People who love their pets, generally are just warm and loving people and make great friends. I count you as one of mine! :p

Thank you... I take that as a compliment.
Btw I wanted to remark, that is an awfully cute baby your holding... I like how that little foot is sticking out and how she is so snuggly against your chest.

Will do, WVHiflyer! Some of the more recent stuff that I have posted about marketing is floating around in other posts on this site - so, will have to search for them. In the meantime, you might want to check out the following old posts to give you some initial ideas. Most of the information that is on them concerning marketing could easily be used for the marketing of just about any business or goods.

I peeked in the Art subject before, but couldn't answer any or the questions. Now I find that y'all are willing to see our own art.... I'm gonna try and see if I can manage to post 1 here. (This old pencil drawing of Mel Blount is the only one of my art I have on my 'puter - it was scanned >10 yrs ago w/ Win95 and has some pixel errors.)

WOW! Truly amazing my fellow arteest! You sound exactly like me... I do my best work from pictures as well. One idea I had was that if you have a camera, you can take your own photos of whatever inspires you (at the moment, for me, it's big old trees with twisting bows and the no leaves and look) and draw from them-that way, it really is unique and your own inspiration, yet you still drew it from a picture.

Can't wait to see more of your awesome work! :)

Thanks much!
Most of the pics in my albums are of things. Before my sis stole my camera I too mucho rolls with the intent of getting some to draw/paint. Problem is, I could never decide which to do  I did do 2 acrylics of sites at Erie's Presque Isle (had 2 pieces of wood to experiment with) and if I weren't so modest I'd tell you how great they are. :o

Tonight I put an ad on Craig's List and I'd like to know what y'all think.

Hi again, WVHiflyer!

I did find your ad on craigslist for the Pittsburgh, PA area. My initial response is that it would help if you had more information about you in it in order to be credible and trustworthy of potential customers. I would like to work with you on this, but, we must be careful to word things on this site so that they don't appear to be advertising on this site. This is going to take some time because we all aren't on here at the same time and also we all have our individual obligations outside of this site.

You did a good, initial job of placing an ad. It's taken me over three years of work to know how and where to place ads on the Internet. I have become good enough at placing ads so that they get great exposure when people do searching for things on the Internet, that I have made doing that for people one of my businesses.

Please don't be afraid of putting your first and last name as well as your complete contact information like, phone number and email address. Your home or studio address probably isn't as important at this point since you are just starting with the advertising. But, people do need to be able to contact you in a number of ways, and not just by the anonymous way on craigslist.org. You could even post some images of what you have done on craigslist.org in order to gain business. I have posted images on craigslist in order to advertise for some groups that I advertise for locally around where I live.

You will get the hang of this concerning the advertising. As I have already stated in a number of places on this site, most of my business comes from the free ads that I have placed on the Internet. Because of that, I am thinking of getting rid of my ads in the Yellow Pages of the local phone book because the Internet has worked out so much better for me!

Here are a few of suggested re-titles of your ads for starts:

Pittsburgh, PA Area Portrait Artist Available for Hire

Portrait Artist Available for Work in the Pittsburgh, PA Area

People or Pet Portraits Drawn in the Pittsburgh, PA Area

Pittsburgh Area Artist Draws People or Pets to your Specifications

Just some ideas...

Am looking forward to working with you on this!

Thanks!

Sean, are you working on any art projects now??? Waiting to see your next one! :)

we are now starting on our final art project for this year (yr 12s only do 3 terms instead of 4, and then just exams)
We have to do it with a simulated client/artist relationship, and we were randomly given the projects. I have to do a ceramic wall piece for a Tuscan style backyard :)
and the project theme is "Seasons"
:) should be fun
I will post some pics of some projects I haven't yet posted soon :)

Flyer,
Great work!
And do heed the advice of Clough and Jan,they are pros when it comes to marketing and selling art work.

Jan,
Wonderful to see your pic here...
I love the art piece right above your head in the background.

G,

Cal, waiting patiently for posts of your work!! Not impatient or anything. Ha. Well, maybe a little. Not much art being posted and I get really hungry to see other's work and talk art. Miss the back and forth discussions on art.

Ode to my world, full of flowers

This world holds my garden, that grows near and far.

My garden, colorful and fragrant
Spreads near and far.
Yellows and reds
Burst of purples and blues , pinks and whites
And oranges too.
Each of them giving off their unique beauty
Or fragrance, to my delight.

Every morning before the dew has lifted
I go about, up and down the streets
Winding through the hills or flat lands,
Taking in their beauty and smell.

To my awe there is always something new to see.
Treasures to be found on a meandering path or back in the mountains.
Often at the side of the road or the edge of a yard,
A bud ready to peak
Or a blossom bright and open.

As often as not, I see them gently
Bow their heads,
Ready to give back from which they came.
Down to the ground it will fall and start all over again .

This world holds my garden, that grows near and far.

I hope no one minds me posting this site... here is an artist and her life with a coyote and her cat that she has raised since babies. You will find some neat, interesting and funny pictures on the site.
If you look at the buffalo skull picture, there is a story about a little girl that has started an eBay auction to help endangered animals. I hope you all enjoy some of the pictures as much as I have. There are many archived that shows him growing up and also some nice pictures of the surronding area. The Daily Coyote (http://dailycoyote.blogspot.com/) Enjoy!

Just to show that drawing isn't all I do, I ofer the following 2 pics. They're from the Zombiefest in Monroeville, PA, 2006 (it broke a Guinness record for the event, then they did it again 2007). That's my 'adopted' niece holding my handiwork. I wear it on Halloween instead of my everyday leg. (I couldn't make the event but wanted at least part of me there... )
