Dear someone,

My husband and I are married but currently live and work in two different states -- I in Kentucky and he in Illinois. Will this impact our federal filing and, if so, how? And how do we file state taxes? Also, how do I go about finding a tax professional with expertise that can cover both states and determine what is best for us? I make significantly more money and have itemized deductions for my home and this year, medical expenses. He on the other hand has deductions for his own business of sorts. Does someone have some helpful advice for how we should file and also on finding someone locally that is competent from an all-encompassing tax purpose?

Thanks so much!

The tax professional you use should prepare the return both separately and jointly (easily done with tax software) and then compare the results.

Most tax pros can handle multiple state returns without too much trouble. I have prepared returns for virtually every state in the country that has a state income tax (plus the DC tax).

Your tax return will include state returns as residents for the home states (for you as well for your husband). Then if any one had income in a state other than home state (while living in the other state), then you also file the nonresident tax return for that state.
