I purchased a bath room vanity from IKEA that has limited space for installing piping including a P trap! I did get it installed without the trap however, there is a sewer smell coming from the drain in the vanity. I know it needs a p trap but at the time I could not figure out how to get a trap for the limited space inside the vanity! This vanity has two draws that allows for a 4 and 3/8" space between the back of the draws to the wall. I cut an opening on the wall to give me enough space to attach the drain pipe from the sink but no room for a P trap. I don't want to cut any part of the vanity draws to accommodate a trap, and have search for a small but adequate P Trap to fit in the space - no luck. The space inside the wall is 3 and 7/16" deep. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

First thing I would do would be to move that vanity brace down to fit under the stop valves and the trap. Then assess the situation for the trap.

Hi Higsb

My guess is that you have a drawer there and you haven't thought about cutting it... is that correct? If so, then I would suggest that you remove the drawer for now, install a PTRAP correctly and then cut a notch out of the back of the drawer (see image)... should not need to cut the bottom of the drawer. That should allow the drawer to slide in and out without hitting the new PTRAP. A notch like this will NOT affect the integrity of the drawer as long as you don't plan on standing on it... ;)

Finally, do NOT put this off for too long... sewer gasses are very unhealthy!
