My husband was promoted on Monday and then on Tuesday he had a horrible cough at work and his boss told him to go home because his coughing was pretty bad. We went to urgent care and was told that he had bronchitis. My husband called his boss and he told him to take Wednesday and Thursday off and come back Friday. My husband felt better Thursday and called his boss and his boss said just to stay home and rest and they would see him Friday. Then Thursday night his boss called and told him he was fired. How is that legal? My husband had the highest sales and was due for not only the promotion but a huge bonus as Well. It just seems shady to me.

Your husband needs to take this up with the labor board. Unless of course there is more to the story.

Unless he had an employment contract or belonged to a union it's employment at will - he could have been let go for just about anything, including the color of his socks.

It may or may not have been shady. It does sound strange.

Are you sure there isn't anything more to the story?

Just up the road from me Jamilee. Illinois is an "at will employment " state so Judy is correct. He could be terminated for good cause, bad cause or no cause at all. Many companies in Cook and DuPage County are feeling the pinch of this economy and trim the labor force when they can. Maybe they were trying to avoid a future bonus but most companies in this area are not doing raise let alone bonuses

As far as the phone conversations, I was there with my husband when he called, so nothing more there. I felt the employer was shady before this when all who were hired at the same time as my husband was fired as Well as the current office manager finding out that another man they hired was there to take over his position after he trained him himself, then he quit and the then they fired the man they hired and offered the position my husband. Bonuses were paid "under the table" as well. Just shady.
