Hey unky. In the same boat. Fortunately, I start a retoactive disability pension and health care including dental and drug coverage at the end of this month to Nov 2009. I had to put out nearly $6500 for prescriptions which will take up to 8 weeks to get mostly refunded. Out of pocket costs should be less than $400-500 anyway.

Health care isn't quite right yet for February onward, but Dec and Jan expenses are being adjusted. There is probably a difficulty in having two different plans from the same health care provider active at the same time. They were enabled at the same time too, retroactive to different dates. This probably confused them.

Meanwhile it's pollen season for me and there's at least a 30 gal garbage bag of the pollen I'm allergic to on the lawn.
It's also driving my Asthma nuts and the rain is causing a migraine.

It's German. It means "old way" or "old path".

I don't really have much food right now. I haven't been actually grocery shopping since the beginning of march. The amount of food I buy is limited to what I can carry on my bike, and the last time I went shopping was the beginning of the month.

I have raman, soup, and a frozen pizza. The few other things I have take ingredients I DON'T have. Then again, there's always pb&j.

I started this new diet. My sister has been on and has lost 5 pounds in 2 weeks.

Protein and very low carbs... ( like atkins diet) breakfast and lunch

Then you get a "rewards meal" you can have no protein 1 hour before this meal or 1 hour after and it should be the same time everyday.

Rewards meal is anything you want within one hour but it needs to be balanced... protein, fats, carbs and yes it includes sweets too. I've lost three pounds in 2 weeks. It is easy for me to do. I don't think about food all the time now.

Will it really work? I have no clue but it is worth a try.

Thought I'd share. :)

You don't have to bother getting a prescription for a sleeping aid. There are plenty of safe natural remedies sold over the counter nowadays which give you almost five hours of good sleep without waking up groggy.

Try putting a uv bulb in a lamp and sitting by it for a couple hours a day to relieve the seasonal depression. The bulbs are expensive, but I'm sure you'd rather pay a bit for a bulb every now and then rather than spend all winter depressed.

I know you don't know me(yet), but for the past 43 years(all my life) I have had depressive episodes, and manic episodes(they were called hyperactivity when I was young)

I have been through most every type of therapy, from actual light therapy,to biofeedback.Breathing therapy, etc.

Makes perfect sense. A uv bulb is just a simple, and fairly harmless, treatment for seasonal depression that works for a lot of people.

I did a paper of seasonal depression forever ago. It only had to be like 3-5 pages long, so I didn't get very in depth. I don't remember all of what I learned, but I remember enough to know that there isn't always a simple explanation for how weather effects our moods.

I just got back from the grocery store when I was hungry. I ended up accidentally skipping lunch. Food shopping when you're hungry is a REALLY bad idea when you ride a bike. I ended up hanging about 60 lbs off my handlebars.

I did, however stop by subway on the way home. A foot long sub just disappeared in under 10 minutes, and I'm still kind of hungry.

Even better, I have FOOD in my house again. And I got fresh food this time. Oranges, and salad, and cucumbers, and carrots, and a little watermelon. Somehow, the eggs survived the trip in the basket on my handlebars. I was sure they broke when I hit a big bump and everything in it almost flew out.

The best ones are papa john's pizza with mushrooms. They provide a garlic sauce that you dip the pizza in that makes it divine.

That doesn't sound too nice, I've found that 'sauces' that claim to taste the same as a food product, are never a good thing.

Honestly I would put barbecue sauce on most foods, but then that would be too much of a good thing so it has to be saved for special meals :)

How's the kitty's? did you go groccery shopping yet?

Kitties are fine. The babies love crawling under my console to hide and play. I think a big part of that is because mommy doesn't fit under there, so she can't pin them down and give them baths.

Yes, I went grocery shopping. Ended up with probably about 60 lbs (27 kg) of food hanging off my handlebars. The basket I got yesterday says that any more than 6.5 lbs (3 kg) of weight on your handlebars jeopardizes steering. Well, not only does 60 lbs jeopardize steering, but it also puts so much pressure on the front tire that every bump makes it feel like the tire exploded.

If you hit a big enough bump, then the eggs in your basket WILL jump 6 inches in the air and land on their side. Luckily, the bread in the basket with them will keep them from breaking. You will however, skid sideways in the gravel and then almost hit a wall when all the weight makes you overcompensate your steering when you try to stop so you can right the eggs and save the sub you just bought for dinner from falling out.

Beef..? It's just the type of cut.

Cut from the short loin, the strip steak consists of a muscle that does little work, and so it is particularly tender, though not as tender as the nearby ribeye or tenderloin.

Oh, I know it was amusing. It was amusing when it was happening. I'm fine and my bike is fine and all my food is fine, so I see no reason to not laugh about it.

My philosophy is; as long as no one is hurt, you might as well laugh.

My mother doesn't like my philosophy. It might have something to do with the time the tire flew off the car. We were driving home after she came to get me for break. The car had been making weird noises for awhile. As were driving through a little town, the front driver's side tire just came off. The car went one way. The wheel went another, and kept going until it hit a church. I cracked up laughing, went to get the tire, and was STILL laughing when I rolled it back to the car. That was 4 years ago and, as of last summer, there's still a trench in the road where our axel took a chunk out of it. I still laugh when I pass that church.

I completely agree with teaching kids that not all families are a mommy and a daddy and 2.5 kids. It's something children NEED to know.

They do NOT need to be told that gay men get aids and die. That's exactly how it translates for a 3rd grader. They're told that gay men run a higher risk of getting hiv, and they hear that all gay men get aids and die. It's just too subtle a difference for them to completely understand at that age.

Go ahead. Teach them about all the different kinds of families and that ALL families are good and deserve respect and love. Teach them understanding and acceptance. Do NOT teach them that one demographic gets sick just because of who they are.

I want to know if they realize what that will do to all the little boys who, in a few years, suddenly realize that their bodies react to other little boys. They are going to have a voice in their heads telling them that they're going to get aids and die. It's not going to be connected with unprotected sex. In their young minds, being a gay male causes hiv. Nothing else.

It doesn't MATTER what they learn later. The thing that will stick with them is the first thing they learned. That being gay will kill them. They probably won't even realize that the thought is there. They'll probably just feel like being gay is sick. They may never connect it to that lesson they had in school when they were little, but the connection will still be there.

It's already hard enough to realize you're gay in today's world. They don't need any added stigma. What they need, is to grow up in a world that doesn't see race, religion, heritage, income, or gender. Since that isn't going to happen, they need to grow up without anyone telling them that one group is any less healthy or deserving or special or equal than any other.

Things like that just make me want to smack someone.

Sigh.

Hheath, I have never agreed with someone so whole heartadly inmy life.

As I continued to watch, it was most disturbing in one place where they were going as far as teaching the kids about how babies were made, and how gay people have sex.

I could see the confusion and curiosity in those children's faces as they were interviewing their parents on the subject.

J, mind if I vanish with you? I've been feeling a bit low myself. Got tested for my tyhroid. I could sure use a good vanishing.

I hope you feel better soon. I hope everything works out for you.

I don't live near a beach, but I do live near the river.. lol sound funny. But seriously, there are really no beaches in this crappy city.. Buildings have swallowed most of the land so we have side walks and mini parks by the river.

Anywhozzil good morning all.

At that age, it's up to the PARENTS to explain sex to their kids. Third graders are 8-9 years old. Schools need to wait until they're at least 11-13 before going into details about sex. It's simple not an appropriate conversation at school for an age group that young.

Give them all the correct names for body parts. Explain about the different types of families. Give the basics of how the reproductive system works. But schools just do NOT need to be explaining the finer points of sex that young.

If I could, I would give them all a home. However, though Rissa forgave me for bringing Chloe home, I don't think she would be as forgiving if I brought home a few million. (On second thought, I don't think Cats would be either.)

I don't think I should adopt any more pets for a very long time. My track record is interesting.

About 3 years ago, I adopted a couple kittens form my sister. They were both boys, even the vet said so. Then one of them got pregnant and had four babies.

A couple months ago, I adopted a little stray. She had six babies.

Every time I adopt a pet they end up giving birth.

Hell, I even ended up adopting a pregnant fish. Granted, the babies got eaten before I could do anything about it, but they were still there.

A little bummed out. Feeling kind of invisible these days. Been thinking of taking a break from a few things. One being the shelter. I'm trying to keep my peeves to a minimum, but I am failing miserably.

Everything okay at the shelter?

Aurora_Bell
Apr 23, 2010, 08:13 PM
No, it's not okay at the shelter. It's taking a toll on my life and it's making me feel like an awful human being. I don't know what's wrong with me. I feel... stupid. It's not even about me, but I seem to be making it about me.

This dog is getting put down, I don't think he should be. I am so upset with the things I have been seeing. And I feel helpless, it's completely out of my control. I used to love going on the dog forum, I really used to enjoy it. Now I can't even bring myself to go on it.

I can't even explain how I feel right now. I think I may take some time off AMHD too. I don't know what's wrong with me.

I am sorry about the dog. Working at animal shelters can take a huge toll on anyone with a heart and I know you have a big one. Taking a break might be a good idea before you get totally burned out.

I can tell you that the past couple of weeks have not been easy on you. From surgery, going back to work early and topping it off with the news about getting laid off. It is enough to send anyone into a downward spiral. Maybe you need to switch outlets for a few days. Give yourself time to recharge by spending time with your family (daughter and pup).

No one would think less of you if you need some 'me' time. As you have probably noticed, you will be missed (by me for just one person) and if you ever want advice just start a thread. Not only will you get advice, you will get comic relief and probably end up with it hijacked a few times. :)
