View Full Version : Wiring new condenser fan motor

:confused: My new AC condenser fan motor has an extra wire and a different type capacitor. What do I do with it?

AC is a 1998 SEER 12 Rheem. New motor is an A.O. Smith 1/8 HP 208 RPM 208-230 volt.

Old Emerson 1/10 HP motor has 3 wires, black, brown, and orange. Which was connected to a Amrad 3 terminal (one white two black) mfd +/- 10 capacitor(round at the top cylinder shape). C = herm white cap fan lower value. New A.O Smith motor has 4 wires, Black, brown, orange, and brown with a white stripe that came with a new 2 terminal (2 white) 5 mfd Rotom double 370/440v oval capacitor. Does anybody know where the wires go? It appears both capacitors will be used. And if so where does the extra capacitor mount? Can anybody help me out? Also the new motor has a much longer shaft. Do I cut this to the old motors shaft length?

Correction*** Which was connected to a Amrad 3 terminal (one white two black) 40.0/3.0 mfd +/- 10% capacitor(round at the top cylinder shape). C = herm white cap fan lower value.

Leave the old capicitor alone as it is needed for the compressor to run

The new motor should have a wiring diagram on the side of the housing,, the brown and brown/white stripped wire go to the new 5mfd capicitor
The black and orange should go to top of the contactor to be powered when the contactor or powered on by the low voltage (tstat) size wires coming from inside and going to the contactor,

Now as for the length of the motor shaft, if its not touching anything it doesn`t really need to be cut off

Ok. Brown wires hooked to capacitor. Black to line(Same place on contactor as it was before). Orange goes where? The longer orange wire is connected to low voltage(Smaller wires underneath). Also does the new capacitor get mounted to this panel? C:\Documents and Settings\Tim Leach\My Documents\My Pictures\New Folder\wires

Observe the wiring on the contactor. Two power wires connect to the line side (incoming power supply). Power passes through the contactor to the loads (compressor & fan). Connect orange wire to the load-side opposite the black wire. Mount/secure the capacitor inside the control compartment, assuring no contact between the terminals and metal surfaces. The smaller wires are likely for reversing motor rotation. Air must discharge from top of unit when running. If it doesn't, reverse rotation (see motor label).

Going by the pic: connect the orange motor lead to the upper-right contactor pole (same pole as the orange capacitor lead), connect black motor lead to upper-left pole.

Pic is kind of small. Nex time use www.irfanview to re-size. Use 640 for the longest dimension ans let it resize proportionally.

This has to be a joke. You know if you get your compressor and or fan motor wired wrong it can be a very costly mistake. The wiring diagram is on the side of the motor and with the paper in the box. It may be time to call a professional before you do more damage or get hurt.
