View Full Version : Do I need a happy pill?

Krazi
May 22, 2009, 02:24 PM
First off let me state this very clear...
I love my wife and I love my kids, they are my life.

Now to get to the point. In the last couple of years I noticed that my mood sucks.
It seems that I'm always in a bad mood for one reason or another, and when I am in a good mood in an instant I can become an angry . [ for petty reasons]

My wife says I need "the happy pill"

Anyway while at home I feel trapped and I get antsie and want to leave the house, no special place in general. Some days I'm fine and then other days I feel like the world is about to end.

Kids will be kids and my wife and I have our stress moments... bills, etc.. etc..
No more and no less than any other married couple. I though it was arising from my family but I have found that anyone and anything sets me off.

Now for my past...
I only hung out w/ 2 friends and I never made the habit to roam or wonder nor did I party until I was older, like 20yrs of age older. I was always happy unless trouble came about and I never had mood swings like I'm having now.

So, what's your thought on this?

J_9
May 22, 2009, 02:31 PM
Krazy,

What is your job like? How many kids? How long have you been married?

Can you describe when and why these "mood swings" occur?

Krazi
May 22, 2009, 02:50 PM
I'm a die cutter... "we make boxes"
It's a cool job and the let me play with big knives to cut with.
Even at work I have mood swings... I can be quality fanatic then in
Quick turn I couldn't care less and get pissy, not directed at anyone just pissy.

I have 3 kids and married now for 6yrs. [ I married my college love]

I'm always irritable so it doesn't take much of anything. My mood swings are never directed at anyone
Nor do the occur from one single person/person's.

How long have you noticed this going on?

Alty
May 22, 2009, 02:55 PM
Are you depressed or just get angry easily?

Have you talked to your doctor about this?

There are many pills out there, but not everything requires a pill.

Have you considered counselling? I know, everyone says counselling, but it works, that's why. ;)

I believe in counseling, but I think that word gets thrown around WAY too much.

I believe in counseling, but I think that word gets thrown around WAY too much.

I agree J, but I believe in it too.

I'm on anti depressants after trying all other avenues and having them fail. I do think that counselling, when depressed or having mood swings, is important, after seeing your doctor to rule out a chemical imbalance or clinical depression . That's just an opinion though. ;)

Counselling helped me a lot, but without my meds I'm not a pleasant person to be around so I believe in them too.

I think the trick is finding what works for you, and sometimes that can take a long time.

J_9
May 22, 2009, 03:13 PM
Been through counseling... did nothing. Waste of money and waste of time. There is no way to find out if there is a chemical imbalance. No blood tests for that.

Alty
May 22, 2009, 03:17 PM
I didn't realize that, I thought there was a way to test. I guess I got lucky, the first pill I tried worked. I've been on them since 2001.

But that's for depression. Are anger issues, or mood swings with anger the same as depression? Would the same pills work?

Counselling definitely isn't for everyone, also I went through a few until I found one that worked for me. I haven't been in years but the tools she gave me, well, I still use them today and I have to say that they work.

I wish there was a quick fix Krazi.

I'll leave you in J9's hands, she's much more capable then I am. Just thought I'd throw my 2 cents in. No need to give me change. ;)

J_9
May 22, 2009, 03:20 PM
No, there is no way to tell. Finding the right pill is like finding a needle in a haystack. If a pill is even needed.

Sometimes one just needs to look inside himself/herself, to find out what the problem is and find a way to correct the issue.

Krazi
May 22, 2009, 03:28 PM
Its been an on going issue for a few yrs now.
Not sure if it is depression but not ruling it out.
Counceling... not a chance, all I need is for some shrink to piss me off and I find myself in a lawsuit.
Lmao!!

J_9
May 22, 2009, 03:55 PM
It may not be depression, but rather anxiety. This sounds more like anxiety than depression to me.

Krazi
May 23, 2009, 11:21 AM
Anxiety:

Everyone feels anxious from time to time — like when you're running late or interviewing for a job. People with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), however, feel some anxiety or worry almost constantly.

They often anticipate disaster or have exaggerated worries about a wide range of issues, from their health to their families to their daily responsibilities. Yet even when they recognize that the worrying is excessive, it is hard to control

------
Anxiety is based from worries in the inth degree right? If so then its not anxiety, I dont worry at all.
I'm always telling my wife to stop worring and to relax. But I do get the wicked "i gotta get outta here" and if I can't get out of the house then my attitude gets pissy. Hell maybe it is a form of anxiety I don't know.

J_9
May 23, 2009, 11:27 AM
That is one form of anxiety, yes. Anxiety isn't always about worry. I have anxiety and I don't every worry about anything.

Like you, I get snappy. Little things tend to set me off.

LOL, I take Celexa, and if I miss a few days my kiddos remind me. I just get really aggravated easily.

Krazi
May 23, 2009, 11:46 AM
Yeah... me to.
Then I get crazy and ramble on and on and on caused by a pet peeve like...

Wasted phone call : someone who call but has no topic for conversation so its like dead air most of the time.
[ um, thanks for calling, don't call me, I'll call you]

Stupid questions :
I just woke up after working the night before and I'm asked "do you know where the remote/phone is?"
[how the hell do I know]

The never ending reminder :
Always reminding me " its 2:45, dont forget to pick up your son"
[w-t-f , what is up with that]

J_9

I hear you all the way! I'm currently going through that. Been out of my celexa now for 2 weeks, and BOY is it hard to keep my mouth shut. LOL

"mom, can you get me a pepsi?" "Son, what are those two things on the ends of your legs? Walk over and get it yourself."

"You have cheerleading practice AGAIN!!!" When I knew full well she has it every day, 7 days a week, through the summer.

Gimme my happy pills and everyone else is happy in the house. LOL

I love my wife but really folks how many times does she really need to call the house "while at work" 15 time, 20 time...

Oh... oh.. heres one..
Phone call, they aske "for you" then they say...
We were going over your account and we noticed that your late in paying this moths bill, if you like o we can take payment over the phone...

My reply:
I'm sorry how late are we?

Dumb reply:
You account is 2 days pass.

My reply:

It must be my birthday cause I woke up after a 12hr shift [ 7pm - 7am... slept until about 11am] and no one is here.

Weeeeeee... I'm alone!!

What to do first?

artlady
May 23, 2009, 12:16 PM
Hi Krazi!
One thing you said makes me think of anxiety. The urge to just get up and leave ,almost sounds like I feel when I have an anxiety attack.

I am hypoglycemic and when my sugar is low ,I get very anxious and while I have only had a few full blown attacks where I really panicked I have the same feeling, like I have to get away from everything.Even from myself.(impossible)

Could it be that you are having anxiety attacks? Perhaps you too have low blood sugar?

It can be easily overlooked.

Any history of diabetes in your family?

You are a 12 hour shifter as well. I'm having a hard time adjusting to summer so far.

Artlady, I can relate the feeling, but no hypoglycemia here.

Krazi
May 23, 2009, 12:22 PM
My mom is boarder line diabetic...
What the hell is boarder line? Either you have it or you don't.

I'm borderline schizophrenic. I would love to experience schizophrenia for a 24 hour period then give it up.

Krazi
May 23, 2009, 12:28 PM
Hey schizophrenic is better than anxiety right?
I love being with myself...

J_9
May 23, 2009, 12:29 PM
I'm just kidding, I'm NOT borderline schizophrenic... not yet, the summer with the kids is just beginning.

All kidding aside for a moment, maybe you are having some sugar problems.I get very antsy and the cure is to eat something starchy.Foods high in carbohydrates.
Try to eat frequent small meals throughout the day and avoid sugars and stimulants, caffeine, nicotine and see if that helps you.
It may be that simple.

Oh, so smoking and 6/8 cans of soda [easy] a day plus the energy drinks at work isn't helping then...

Well I have 2 boys and a baby girl. All is very well.

Alty
May 23, 2009, 01:44 PM
The CPR doll is the bomb! She's all that and a bag of chips. I mean really, she's a guys dream come true. She has a mouth, she has breasts, she doesn't talk, doesn't move, won't ever turn you down.

She's the kind of girl you bring home to mom. :)

Yeah, tell me about it!! If it weren't for the Full Throttle (extra large can) at midnight I'd never make it a full 12 hours.

Krazi
May 23, 2009, 07:34 PM
First, all I need is breast and a heart beat the rest is a bonus and full throttle doesn't do me any good...

I like BAWLS, the taste and wow it gets me going!

Regular flavor... rootbeer... cherry... diet w/ extra caffeine... and diet w/ extra guarana---the diets taste like zima beer.

Hey Krazi were you still wanting some feedback on your post, or are you all cheered up now?

Cos I've been in the 'needing happy pills' zone as well.

Oh no... feedback is very well needed.

Today I called my wife and asked if there was money in our "gas" account about 15 minutes later she called back and asked if I already got the gas [ so she can track the amount balance ] I blew up and told her "what so there is a f'n time limit to get gas now or what?!!"

Yeah... not my best moment.

Yeah-eah!

I want a new drug
One that won't make me sick
One that won't make me crash my car
Or make me feel three feet thick

I want a new drug
One that won't hurt my head
One that won't make my mouth too dry
Or make my eyes too red

One that won't make me nervous
Wondering what to do
One that makes me feel like I feel when I'm with you
When I'm alone with you

I want a new drug
One that won't spill
One that don't cost too much
Or come in a pill

I want a new drug
One that won't go away
One that won't keep me up all night
One that won't make me sleep all day

One that won't make me nervous
Wondering what to do
One that makes me feel like I feel when I'm with you
When I'm alone with you
I'm alone with you, baby

I want a new drug
One that does what it should
One that won't make me feel too bad
One that won't make me feel too good

I want a new drug
One with no doubt
One that won't make me talk too much
Or make my face break out

One that won't make me nervous
Wondering what to do
One that makes me feel like I feel when I'm with you
When I'm alone with you
I'm alone with you

I sure hope so Bear, but it would literally take half a million dollars to work through this. I don't think the tooth fairy will bring that much.

Or maybe you could ask for an upfront loan, then at least no one would have to loose any teeth... yet :)

Loans are impossible at this juncture. We have already taken out half a mil and put our family's home on the line.

Oh, well, what doesn't kill you makes you stronger.

Ah sorry to hear that J, times are hard :(

Lets hope what ever tried to kill you, you get the jump on and put one square between its eyes in round 2 :)

I don't have answer for you, but am wondering how the medication helped. I feel the Same way that you do!! I just want to be happy all the time, but something is holding me back. I also write poetry very similar to you. Please let me know how the medication worked. I need something desperately! This is affecting all aspects of my life including my job!

My Husband was acting the same Way just about a Year ago.. He also has three kids and he has been married for 6 years too. Well anyway , My husband and I Thought Maybe it could be Depression Or Just Stress out Or something so I Told him to go to the Doctor just to see what can be done like maybe counseling or just to get on a " Happy pill " So He went to the doctor to see what was wrong with him and The doctor Did some Test and We Found out That he has bipolar . Maybe You should go to the Doctor to see what is wrong. I hope I Helped you. Good luck :-)

Elevated cortisol can be detected in a blood test.

Elevated levels of this hormone is secreted during stress. Estrogen and dopamine are also chemicals that can affect depression in individuals.

There is a fine line between balancing what occurs naturally, with what is missing, or at lower levels than normal, or higher levels than normal.

Alcohol, drugs, thyroid conditions etc. can all contribute to depression.

I agree with the others who say to get a complete physical checkup, including blood work, and speak to your doctor about the signs and symptoms you are experiencing. I also agree that treating the symptoms you describe may not be as simple as taking a pill.

Counselling could be very beneficial. You may be surprised with what a good counsellor can do for you.

I had a friend once who was bipolar. One of her manic episodes landed her in the mental hospital, and later she told me that to get out, she had to convince them she was "happy, but not TOO happy". A fine line to walk, I'm sure.

Krazi, I totally relate to you. I have been on Lexapro for about 5 yrs, and twice I've tried to get off it or switch to something else. I become a completely different person(not good) I am in the best relationship of my life, I have become a Christian, I love my kids, etc. I just may be one of those people that will always have an imbalance. I have tried counciling several times. All of my depression started as a teenager, I'm 31 now. I had to find the right drug for me. Don't get me wrong, I still have crap days, but the Lexapro has to be a part of my life to keep the ugly side of me at bay
