    Is being gay a choice?
I'm gay and I have always wondered if it is really my choice. Like I have never felt 'straight' just gay. So I am wondering if anyone has heard of it being in you DNA or anything like that. Any advice would be helpful!

There isn't any proof that there is a DNA anomaly that makes a person gay. But I believe it's a mix of both. I blieve a person is predisposed to homosexuality. However that person also makes a CHOICE weather or not to act on it.

Like jenniepepsi said there is no proof that DNA has any part in being gay. But it is your choice to act on it. And if your happy with you and your life you should not even have to worrie about if the DNA takes part in it or not. Just being happy is the best bet in life.

    You answered your own question.

    EDIT
Yeah, I'm confident sexual orientation isn't encoded in DNA because it isn't a required bit of information in cell production, that's all DNA is for. Brain activity is where it all happens.

Have a friend since I was 4 years he came out to me when we were 20. I asked him if he thought he choose to be gay or if he couldn't control it. He said it was never a choice He tried to be with girls and it did nothing for him. So I don't think it is a choice plus check out this article it is very interesting. I have posted this before but check it out anyway.

The question that has no answer... there are religious views and then there are scientific views etc... My personal view is that some people make the choice to be gay due to family up bringing, religion, society, emotions, etc etc... but then there are those who have always felt as if they were gay and have tried to fight it or have just acted upon it knowing that how they are is fine... I think for those who are in that situation the only choice that is made is to finally live the life they feel comfortable living... I have never heard of any DNA proof but then again I don't pay much attention.

Sorry for the ramble hope it makes sense...

MMM I'm pretty sure that you will find that DNA is NOT just associated with cell production, it actually has the "codes" for the production of amino acids that make proteins and other molecular components as well as the instructions for use of those itemsAnyway, Did anyone here "make a CHOICE" to be Hetrosexual?? I think not, you just knew you were.

I think THAT answers the question.

You sure showed me, I was just trying to make a point that DNA has nothing to do with sexual orientation. No need to be hostile.

    Calm down.

10% of the human genome hasn't been mapped, I believe that being gay is not a choice, you are either born with it or you aren't.
While there is no conclusive evidence, there might be one day, as I said there is that 10% of unknown.

I fully believe that being gay is just something you are or you aren't. As with any other traits, you have the ability to ignore them and pretend they don't exist, but in all actuality, doing so will probably just make you a really unhappy person and I don't, for any reason, believe in making your life a miserable one to make other people feel more comfortable in your presence.

I believe it's a choice. Just as some people like skinny partners while others like chunky ones... the choice may be influenced by your environment. But its still a choice.

So, you could have gone either way then? Guys or girls? But you chose to be straight?

I find that to be a ridiculous statement. Maybe you can be influenced to some extent. But, no... it is not a choice.

Being gay is more like a random mutation in the gene pool. I could say the same about people with ginger hair. It is not better or worse. It is just different. Life wouldn't exist as it does without these random mutations.

If two gay people would produce offspring, then there would be a high chance of the offspring being gay. Just like 2 ginger people producing ginger offspring. Or 2 black people producing black offspring. Need I say more?

No, in my case I will state, I never thought about it... I was brought with old world values and morals. So I natually did the right thing... No urges to take a walk on the wild side... I preffer to play with equipment different than I was equipped with from the factory. If I feel the urge to diddle with a dinky... I've got one in easy reach, 24 hours a day 7 days a week, in fact I carry it wherever I go.

I strongly disagree... your environment plays a large factor in your choices... and if YOU decide to play with others your own gender it's a choice YOU make... otherwise its called rape.

Same thing with drugs... booze, the friends you have.

YOU don't have a decision in your eye color... your hair, your ethnicity.

But you are responsible for your choices in life. I know the politically correct crowd want to blame everything on something else. Fact is unless you were kidnaped and forced to do things against your will the choice is your own.

Personally I don't care if someone is gay or not... just don't get up in everyone's face about it like a certain minority do... and just admit it's a choice you made.

I was raised with "values and morals" too. In no way did my deeply religious mother encourage me in any way to be gay. This has squat to do with environment. Gay people are wired differently- it's not a choice. Heterosexuality came "naturally" to you, just as being gay is "natural" for gay people.

Oh, and congrats on being the proud owner of your dinky.

So you were forced to have homosexual sex and didn't make a concience decision to do it on your own? Hang around with a bad crowd and you start thinking their actions aren't wrong and you fall into the same behaviour patters they do... hang with a different crowd that doesn't do that and you do the opposite.

People are a product of their environment... or the friends they choose to keep. But that doesn't absolve them from responsibility for being in that eviroment that influenced them... choices are rarely simple and have ramnifications far beyond what you would have guessed.

I'm not on any anti-gay crusade... far from it. I don't care what people do to get their jollies, as long as its concentual. I'm just tired of hearing how nothing is anyone's fault these days... when people are responsible for their own choices and actions.

Cheaters make that decision just as faithful people are, same as gay or Hetero... or Bisexual people as well.

You can interview every gay person in the U.S. and they'll tell you it wasn't a choice. Since you are not gay and have admittedly never made a choice to be straight, you're really not much of an authority on this topic.

Oh, I see where you're going now, LOL! Of course, I made the decision to act upon my gay tendencies. Just as you handle your dinky when you please, or have sex with your wife. People have gay sex because they're gay. However, being gay, having gay thoughts, tendencies and desires is not a choice.
