Is chewing tobacco really that different?
A friend of mine told me that he was able to quit smoking using the patch but that it wasn't strong enough for his buddy who chews tobacco. The other guy has tried wearing two of the strongest nicotine patches and still craves nicotine. Is there a stronger patch available? A long time ago, he quit cold turkey and described his condition as half-asleep for about ten days before it let go. Too bad he started again.

Is it a higher dose of nicotine?
Is the method of absorption a factor?

A lot has to do with the person themselves.
Some are stronger willed and more determined. Also chewing tobacco is stronger in that it goes straight into your blood system and I think it is worse.
I don't know anything about the patches.

The strongest patch we have available here is 24mg.
Any more than that and it is classed "dangerous"

Patched NEED to be placed above your heart... upper arms and shoulderss are the best places.
If you tend to sweat a lot it can affect how much is drawn into the bloodstream.

Yes. Chewing tobacco or "chew" is stronger because most chewers put much, much more than just a pinch in their mouth. I had a friend who could easily put 1/2 can of Copenhagen snuff in his mouth around his teeth at one time and then spit it out for hours on end. The amount of nicotine contained in chew is much more than smoking cigarettes. The person also needs to remember that chew can result in the tobacco juice going down their throat into their stomach causing all sorts of problems such as throat cancer and stomach cancer and serious stomach problems. Also the problems with the teeth and gums needs to be addressed. The people (yes there are women who indulge in this disgusting habit) who chew snuff or chewing tobacco have horrible teeth and gums and halitosis. If anything have that person go back to cigarettes because the tobacco is not held inside the mouth and having the toxic tobacco juice into their system. Remember, tobacco juice is a great bug killer when used on plants. You might want to remind your friend about the toxins in tobacco juice.

Nope. Tobacco juice just kills da bugs dead. Great to use on tomatoe plants. You will, of course, rinse off any veggies before consuming though.

If you chew tobacco the juice can and will give you some swell stomach and digestive problems. If you swallow a larger amount you can and will most definitely puke all over! My late husband would indulge in this awful habit and if he happened to swallow a mouthful of spit with tobacco in it he would most definitely heave ho.

I didn't say that it wasn't a bad habit. There is so much disgust though. I'm surprised. Nicotine is very addicting, period, I smoke and quitting is so hard.

If an overweight person had trouble quitting bad eating habits, would you feel that they were disgusting? It's almost as if someone who has become addicted to nicotine is, unnatural.

I'm not saying that people are abnormal if they smoke, drink, do drugs or what ever, its just that sometimes you would stop and think about the long term effects on yourself before doing the real thing?? Again I'm not a mean person, its my logic of thinking because I don't do none of that! Anything that has a so called addiction to it, has a chioce attached to the end of it? Have you tried patches before?? Nicotine inhalers?? Gum?

That's my question. What quitting aids are available to someone who is addicted to nicotine, much more nicotine than a smoker's patch accommodates? He could add gum to the patches... But what is safe? If he's used to huge quantities of nicotine, is it unsafe to forget the doctor's orders and just deal with it? Is there a way to measure what's in the system and wean away to nothing from there?

If your friend has that much of a nicotine habit due to the large amount of chew they ingest each day I would definitely have them see a doctor for treatment. Taking that much nicotine in one's system each day can be literally life threatening due to the stimulating effect to the heart. This is not an easy drug to get weaned away from. Adding gum to patches is not a good idea as the person could literally overdo this effect and have a heart attack from adding too much nicotine to their system. That's why it is common knowledge that young children should not ingest cigarette butts as they could get nicotine poisoning very easily and die.

You did not state just how many cans or bags of chew or snuff that friend of yours consumes each day and how they stuff it into their mouth. The daily quantity is one indication but the real telling is in the habit of just how much they stuff into their mouth at one time. It's like smoking 5 cigarettes at one time when a person puts a huge wad of chewing tobacco or snuff into their mouth. It's the initial "kick" that this huge amount of product has to the person's system that's at stake here.
