    Finding retained earnings with common stock
    How do you find total stockholders' equity of you have the following information?

    Common Stock, $1 par, authorized
    400,000 shares, issued 290,000 shares 290,000
    Additional paid-in capital 180,000
    What is retained earnings?

    Insufficient information.

    This is like saying 100 + 150 + x = y
    and then trying to solve for either x or y. Impossible. You've got to have other info available.
