    Hunter Fans Wiring Problem
20 year old fan blew the circuit board / the receiver board in the fan-fan and light unswitched -old house two wire system in the ceiling-don't know where it goes-two black fabric coated wires coming into the box in the ceiling-a white and a black wire have been added to the end of the two wires- I hooked up the new fan and light with remote exactly per the directions / checked and re checked -fan on all three speeds and the light worked with the remote- two minutes later with the light off the and the fan on medium, the receiver burned out- took it apart and wires were all correctly connected and no wires zapped, only the reciver. Problem possibly in the ceiling? What do I do next? Can I wire the light and fan directly and just use the pull chains after I find out the electrical problem and fix it?

    Suggest you S-T-O-P

The statement, "...don't know where it goes-two black fabric coated wires coming into the box",

    Freaks me out.

This means to me that there is Knob and Tube wiring in the residence.
Wiring used back in the '20's.

One Neutral wire runs the length of the entire house. It has branched wires that come off it, and go to individual circuits.
Same with the HOT power wire.

Black is usually used for a power wire. (Black fabric insulation covering)
A lighter shade is usually used for the Neutral wire.

The gauge of wiring for this old wiring system was adequate for the 1920's.
The diameter of the wire is about the size of a No.2 pencil lead.

It is WOEFULLY inadequate for today's electrical usage.

MANY a fire has broken out from still using bits, and parts of this old antique wiring.
(New wires spliced to this old wiring)

Suggest you have a Qualified, Licensed electrician, check out your wiring. May save your life, or someone else's.

    Regards,
