    Contraception options? Possible condom allergy
I had sex for the first time this month. My boyfriend and I have been using condoms, but we are having an allergic reaction to them and I don't know if it's to the latex or if it's to the specific brand. I have family members with latex allergies.

We have been using Trojan Magnums because that is the only kind we've found that are big enough for him. We tried Durex the first time, but they weren't big enough-- however, we didn't have a reaction from the Durex. Could it be something about the brand that we are allergic to? If that's so, then what other brands have Large sized condoms? I want to try another brand to rule out a Trojan allergy.

If this turns out to be a latex allergy instead of just a brand allergy, what are my other options? I'm not thrilled about medications because of personal beliefs, but safety is more important to me than my preference to stay chemical-free. I definitely don't want to go on The Pill because I am horrible at remembering to take medications.

    Any thoughts?

They have lambskin condoms for those with latex allergies.

You will likely have to shop for condoms at someplace more specialized than the drugstore, but there are several materials available.

Condomania Online | Condomania Retail Locations

Try this website to at least learn about your options.

I too have a latex allergy. There are plenty of non latex condoms out there just look. Also lamb skin condoms are great. They prevent pregnancy but not disease.

Also I find it hard to believe he is so big that nothing fits! WOW if that be the case.

It could also be an allergy to the lubricant and/or spermicide.

Sometimes it isn't just a latex allergy, I myself am allergic to both latex and the lubricant used in the condoms.

Unfortunately I have yet to find one that works for me, even lambskin.
I do get some relief by washing/wiping the lubricant off the lambskin before sex and then using my "special" lubricant (hypoallergenic) that my doctor prescribed.

Not wow. OW. Like a lot. That's actually another problem we're figuring out.

And yes, that is the case. Four torn condoms went flying across the room in four frustrated hurls the first night before we picked up the Magnums. The fact that he is so big is part of the reason I'm having a hard time finding other options-- I had to go to a second store to find the Magnums because the first store didn't carry anything like that.

None of the condoms we used had spermicide or a lubricant on them... one of my friends suggested using a lube with the condom just to add a layer between us and the latex. Does that make any sense? I think she's full of it but I'm trying it anyway because what do I have to lose.

I'm going to keep an eye out for lambskin-- but we have a size problem.

I doubt he is THAT big... Porn stars find them, You do have to treat them like you would a baloon, You can take a normal size condom and pull it over your head... yeah, the one with your eyes and ears on it and it won't tear or break. Comedians do it all the time for a laugh.

NO human is that large. If you break one you are misshandling it somehow.

Lack of experience and ego leads some people to beieve they are larger than they really are, I'm 47, I've been in a LOT of mens locker rooms and showers in my life, Gyms, health clubs, pools... I've seen far more weiners in my life than you have... as a straight man, and even though nearly none were erect.. as a man, I know pretty darn close just how big a guy MIGHT get at that point, being I'ma white, european descent male that's on the larger end of the change from flacid to erect size... most of the really big guys flacid grow a far smaller percentage, some hardly at all. Certain ethnic groups far less than others. Think I'm kidding Google it up.

Unless you are married... Lambskin is a really bad idea. No safer than going bareback and with the diseases out there, that's like playing Russian roulette with 5 rounds loaded in the cylinder of the revolver.

Spermacide is an irritant as well to delicate tissues (such as in the vagina and anus) so combined with a very porous natural skin condom will actually INCREASE the chances of passing an STD.

If you aren't ready for a baby, at this point I would say take a break from sex until you find the right combination of contraceptives. You can try a diaphram, a IUD, that spermacide foam, a spermacide free condom, and lube free condom.

Takl to your doctor. There are many many options out there.

    Good luck hon./

I would also suggest you take a break from intercourse until you find a solution to the problem. Till then there is always masturbation but I am sure you would not be able to get your hands around it.

And practice with the condoms, he is having a issue putting them on properly if that is happening.
As noted they will go very very large.

Go to a pharmacy and ask. There are a huge range of condoms, and those to cater for a latex allergy.
As far as the Pill, there are more options like the Implanon Implant - inserted into the under side of your arm - it sends the hormones through your blood stream and is extremely effective (although you can have irregular bleeding patterns at first, if you have problems it can be removed easily and painlessly by your doctor), and you don't have to remember to take anything! Talk to your doctor about your options.

Lou: I have no idea how my "agree" ended up being submitted as a "disagree", but I did mean the Thank You!

I never heard of something like that implant-- I'm only 20, so I definitely don't have any problem with the idea of not being able to get pregnant for at least three years, haha.

This is very interesting if this becomes a long-term relationship, but I think it's best right now for me to keep my eyes on BC that won't outlast my average relationship by 34 months.

PS: to everyone who keeps telling me that we are "using the condoms wrong" and that no man can possibly be that big, etc etc...

No, we are not "misusing" them, and they wouldn't make Large sized condoms if it were the case that nobody would buy them. If it makes you feel better to believe I am full of it, keep on. I am fully aware that the average penis is about 5-6" long, etc etc. I have seen my share of average sized men. I am also more fully aware than you are that he is very definitely not 5-6" long. We have tried to "properly" use average sized condoms, and it doesn't work any more than I can fit into the clothes that are worn by a child 5-6 years old. You will have to take my word for it, because I'm not sending you the pictures. And from this point on, I will consider any such comments about his size to be spam and irrelevant babble, and I will rate them so, though I mean you no disrespect.

I see where they are coming from because so many times we have seen people pitching the use of condoms and have seen people cover there whole head with condom.

I do have a suggestion that you may have or have not tried. Contact the manufacturers of the condoms specifically and ask them if they have non latex large condoms. I'm sure they market to all size men. Maybe most stores don't carry them since there consumer use is so small. Buy them direct!

If I can stretch a regualr size condom over my arm... and I am not a small man... then its going to fit over any human penis that has ever existed.

And point of note... I HAVE PERSONALLY stretched one over my head once just to get a laugh out of girlfriend that was feeling depressed.

And if you do this as threatened...

And from this point on, I will consider any such comments about his size to be spam and irrelevant babble, and I will rate them so, though I mean you no disrespect

I will personally take it to the people that run this site as that's particulaly immature to do, You make claims or boasts on this site then they ARE open to criticism. You are most definitely misusing them if you have had more than one fail.

Incidentally, just how old are you that you can dispute well proven facts about condoms? I'm curious just how many years experience you have using these.
