    1991 honda civic lx bogs down when gas pedal is pushed
    I bought this car about 5 days ago, it's a 1991 honda civic lx 4 door 5 speed, non hatchback. 2 days ago I parked for 5-10 minutes on a 60% grade or abouts. I had turned off the engine and I get ready to start it and it takes more time to start and runs like crap. Sputtering and no power. I rolled it down off the hill onto flatter ground and try again, with the same results. I call my dad he says its probably my gas gage is broken and I'm out of gas. So I get a gas can and put 2 gallons in the car, this took roughly 10 more minutes. And ta-da it starts normally and I give it gass it sputters once and that was the end if that, I get to the gas station to fill up and strangely it only takes another 2 gallons. The car sits for the next day.

    And today I have noticed that when I depress the gas pedal relatively quickly it bogs down and large plumes of white smoke come from the tail pipe, this cloud of smoke smells like unburnt fuel. Thee is also a similar smaller cloud when the idle begins to fall below 1000 rpm (when it gets warm)

    The check engine light comes on for 2-4 seconds when key is turned to run (2 clicks in not start) and I do hear a click when it goes off.

    White smoke is often a sign that the head gasket is leaking antifreeze, which is being burned, due to engine overheating. This is of particular concern on aluminum head engines, where the head can warp and the valves can be damaged.

    All right I just checked the radiator for oil and there was none but in the overflow the tube has a grey slime on it :( if I know anything that's bad... so how hard is it to change the head gasket on a civic?

    Also would it be detrimental to the cars health to drive it with a blown head gasket because there isn't a lot of oil in the antifreeze. And I've seen a horribly blown head and there is a massive amount of oil in its antifreeze.
    My question is could I still drive it to work and back? Roughly 10 miles both ways.

    Also have you heard of the product that you replace the antifreeze with it and run the car for an hour then drain all the liquid out and let it sit over night, and it plugs the hole(s).

    Personally, I would not drive the car until the problem is fixed. Yes, it is hard to replace the head gasket, since it involves the timing belt. Most people who attempt replacing it on their own fail. Since you are there, you have to assess the situation and decide whether to drive it or not. Are you referring to Steel Seal?

    All right thanks for the help I'm going to change the head gasket this weekend down at the motorcycle shop I work at.
