Why couldn't they be made up? The human mind is very creative.

Actual vampires, like what is described in books (must drink blood, turn into bats, can't see themselves in a mirror, etc), no, those exist. People who SAY they are vampires, who like to drink blood, dress in black and so on; yes. Those exist. But somehow I don't think that was the type of "vampire" you were referring to.
