JACKA - Due to a shortage of copper in 1943 , STEEL cents were made , BUT there was a few Bronze planchets were made by error, then through another error there was some 1944 steel cents made ,on steel planchets, BUT THE 1944 coins where struck from bronze threw 1958ALSO there was some made from salvaged cartridge cases:::
NOW to your question, You did not state if there was a mint mark on the coin .. If there was no mint mark then it was a coin from the philadelphia mint,

1944D - VF-20 - .10 cents UNC-65$2.00
1944 D -OVER S - $125.00 UNC- 65 - $ 1850 .oo
1944 S - VF-20 - .15 UNC -65 - $ 66.00

S IS for ( SAN FRANCISCO ) UNC - MEANS UNCIRCULATED
