None at all really. Unless you do 1000 per day. Running would be more potent for losing weight, Though doing sit ups will get you muscles on your stomach which is always nice if you have a low enough body fat percentage.

It's a worth while exercise which I do myself, its compulsory for the armed forces so you know it does something!

There is a calculator that will tell you how much a particular type of exercise burns... Situps / Crunches count as a Moderate exercise routine which is 60% less burn that running. 20 minutes of ab work will probably burn only 60 calories total and that would be 15 sets of 10 reps... It is a great exercise and abs can be done daily easily mixed in with alternate Running, Biking, and Strength Training.

Very few. Sit-ups and crunches exercise a relatively small muscle group, so even though you can work till you are exhausted and your muscles are burning, you are not burning many calories. Try lots of fast walked, that's a great way to burn lots of calories and be able to keep doing it. In the gym, go for squats and deadlifts, they are the big calorie burners.

I don't have time to go to the gym, that's why I'm asking about exercises that I could get away with doing at work. Thanks everyone for the answers.

Then make lots of excuses to climb stairs as often as possible. Stairs burn lots of calories. Squat whenever you get a minute, do lunges anytime you can manage it. Press-ups are good too. If there are any heavy boxes to be lifted, offer to do it. Any change, get up from your desk and move around.

Sitting down for long turns off a fat burning enzyme. If you are are not doing much, just being on your feet keeps you burning more cals than sitting.

Thank you guys. I get exercise at work, but there's not time for sit-ups or all that. I mean I lift people.

    You're a nurse or firefighter?

If you are getting exercise at work, and not seeing results, the next logical place to look is your diet. Particularly for women, you need to get the diet right to see much change in shape.

It really kills me that my husband can go for an occasional walk and eat what he likes, and I have to watch every mouthful and walk and cycle and lift weights to stay at the same fitness level.

Nurse is closest. I'm a delegated nurse's assistant, except there's no nurse to assist, it's just me... hehe. But I have one client that I have to lift to change.

You're right, I need to put my diet under a microscope. I'm replacing larger meals with smaller calorie options right now, so we'll see where that takes me.
