    Riding mower won't start
I started the mower, MTD Yardman 17.5 hp B&S, cut the lawn and put it away. I tried to start it a couple days later and it wouldn't start. I did not even get a "click" from the starter solenoid. I was able to jump start it with a portable jump pack. After turning it off it would not start. I put a new battery in and it started right up. I shut it off after moving the mower to the shed and tried to start it again and it would not start. It will jump start though. The battery does not seem to be getting a charge.

Is there an alternator or some other kind of charging system on this law mower? Or is there something else that might be the problem.

    Any help would be appreciated.

There is a charging system and it could be bad or just a bad rectifier but the battery is usually the cause. I know it is new but the quality of these batterys is poor. Get a volt meter and check volts not running, should be 12+ now with the engine started it should be 13+.

    newaukumdon,

I brought the battery back to the parts store and had it checked. It seems that the new battery I bought was, as you stated, bad. It showed that it was charged, but when he put a load on the battery it did not work.

    Thank you for responding
