Why would a 25 year old want to date a 16 year old? Typically a 25 year old has graduated from college, whereas a 16 year old is either a sophomore or junior in high school.

While it may be legal in some states, it borders on pedophelia. A 25 year old man better never come near my 16 year old daughter.

    Just my opinion.

Well its legal so what's the problem? I actually just found out a few hours ago that my 16 yr old sister is going out with a 22 yr old. I don't mind, my dad might see it differently though. If your happy together age shouldn't be a problem

The age difference of 16 and 25 is huge because of where each person is in their life. One is just finishing high school and has so much growing up to do. The 25 year old should be beginning their life as an adult.

Now if you said someone was 25 and their boyfriend was 34 it seems a bit better because they are both relatively in the same points in their life.

My husband is 38 and I am 29. We started dating when I was 22 and he was 31, but not seriously until I was about 24.

Would I have dated him at 16... no way. My mother and father would have killed him! But now it works.

Oh, but at these ages age can most definitely be a problem.

They are at different psychological stages in development at these ages.

At the age of 16, one is still dealing with psychological stages associated with sexual maturation. This is when the teen typically begins to ask and find out "Who am I?" This is also when the adolescent is acquiring a sense of identity essential for making adult decisions such what they want to do with their lives. During this stage in life there are also new social demands, opportunities, and conflicts that one must overcome.

Now, the age of 25 is when the young adult has ALREADY developed a sense of identity. This is when one is able to fully participate in the community, enjoying adult freedom and responsibility.

These two particular ages are so far apart that it rarely, if ever, works. They are striving for different goals and have different responsibilities.

Now, if you are talking about a 30 year old and a 39 year old (same age difference, different psychosocial structure) it can work beautifully.

Psychologically we mature at different speeds. The mental, emotional, and psychological ability of a 16 year old is nowhere near that of a 25 year old.

The above is not my opinion, but research done by Erikson (a famous developmental psychologist). The below, however, is my opinion.

I still maintain that this borders on pedophelia. Why would a 25 year old want to date someone as young as 16?

I really don't know but have you ever watched Dateline? I saw someone on there who was 22 going after a 15 year old and they arrested him. I would wait until she's about 18 or so before you have any kind of sexual relationship. I know it depends on the laws in the state though.

I agree with you J-9. 16 and 25 too much of an age difference... if they really want to be together they should wait. Both has so much changing to do... emotionally and physically. Much like you stated with Erikson.

They need to wait... if it is meant to be then they will find their way back to each other in a few years from now... take it from someone who knows.

    It's a mixed bag folks.

Older people understand how underdeveloped the young mind is. That's not an insult to the young, it's the reality.

I have an aunt who married a man who is a dozen years younger. Fantastic relationship. Of course, he was in his late 20's to early 30's at the time. He was an adult.

Those who say "as long as youre in love" are really clueless about how the mind differs from 14 to 16 to 18 to 22 to 28.

I really don't care if its legal or not under the law, but if its not legal in my house then it will not be tolerated. If you can support yourself fine, do it but if your counting on my roof for protection my law is the only one you need be concerned with.

While that was a good link posted by Lowtax, I think it missed something. In some states, even where the age of consent has been reached, there is an issue of age difference. So an 18 year old datying a 16 year old would not raise eyebrows, but a 30 year old dating the same 16 yr old could result in statutory rape charges.

In my opinion, the difference between 16 and 25 is at the edge of reason. I have to wonder why a 25 yr old would even be interested in a 16 yr old (or for that matter, a 22 yr old and a 13 yr old). It sounds like exploitation or worse. I don't really see a future for such a relationship. I would wait at least 2 more years and see if he's still interested.

Half of these answers are pointless, the question wasn't 'What are your opinions on... ' or 'What are the moral issues behind... ' or 'Do you think... '

Is it legal? That's all the person asking the question want's to know! Lol!

And by the look of the above, the answer seems to be 'No!'

I don't think that it is right for a 16 and a 25 yr old to date really but of an age gap and the law is against it.
