The Rosetta Stone was unique in that it was inscribed with in three different languages. Greek and Egyptian hieroglyphics (can't remember the third).

Up until its discovery hieroglyphics was a mystery. It was reasonable to assume that because the two known languages on the stone were advocating the same proclamation it was highly likely the Egyptian language was doing the same. This provided a good starting point for deciphering the language.

This is as much as I know about it.
