Charles McGonigal, a retired counterintelligence investigator from the FBI’s NY Field Office, was arrested because he took substantial sums of money from Oleg Deripaska, a Russian billionaire, to get him off a US sanctions list.

They in turn hired him to author the Steele dossier.. Steele admitted to Brit courts that much of it is fabricated .

McGonigal was also indicted on nine counts of concealing his relationship with a former Albanian intelligence officer. The indictment says he accepted secret cash payments totaling $225,000 from this man.
