I Stayed, We were all supposed to Die, Lucked out. Have an Older Lady in her 70's lives behind me, and others that can't or won't leave, someone has to help. Been here since 1981, Have Never Left.
During Hurricane Andrew, Many Evacuated North, and got Hit. I went south to a House on Plantation Key(aprox MM 89), Owner a Doctor Evacuated, Had Mask, Fins, Snorkel, Ski Vest, If knock out, hoping it would keep my head above water? Some type of head protection, forget what. Enough Strong Structures to get behind I believe. I have seen Many Hurricanes, the Aftermath, what Stands and what doesn't. Plus it seems, many who evacuate, say they will never do it again? The Line, No Gas, Stuck, the People, the Shelters, Helpless, I am curious the amount of people who died that stayed, and those who evacuated? I had traced out and Had 3 Phone Lines for the Airborne MPs in Florida City, Before they got there, Most had No phone line, That was Park Royal Inn, Later named Andrew Center. Chain saw and Food from the Red Cross, I would go to the Furthest places, in Homestead, couldn't have done, or been as ready, if I left. The Correct thing to do is Evacuate. I don't encourage anyone to stay, You CAN Die. I used to Live in Vegas, I was playing the odds. Lucked out either way.
During Andrew Had A Car Battery, Scanner, 12 Volt Lights and 12 volt fan for through the night.
During Irma, Had the same, but didn't need. Had Power during the whole time except from about 6:01 to about 6:05(4 Minutes), Which means had AC and Refrigeration. I had Satellite, Internet, Cell Phone the whole time, Many didn't do so well, and lost something or all. The next Day lost Cell and Internet for Days. I had a Copper LandLine for Redundancy, I never use it and is forwarded to my cell(had the line for ~30 years) They are trying to get people away from Copper. I called AD&D, to add Long distance, it took 4 hours one day, another 4 hours the next day(Major Incompetence), seemed like they never did it before? TV is with a Sat Dish. Hate to see people have everything on one input, Telco or Coax, as you May Lose Phone, Internet, TV, Everything.
We Lost Some shingles, No Water Damage, did lose 2 Aluminum Boats, A Shed Loaded with Electrical Equipment and Parts, Many Large Trees fell around us. Major amount of Broken Branches, will take a while to remove, Tucked My Truck at an inside corner of our House(shaped like a "T") Was Untouched. Very Lucky.
Hope you weren't in it. Your Sorry you asked. Take Care, Thanks
