    Snakes in Zoology?
I would love to work with exotic animals like sloths, hippos, giraffes, etc. however I have a deep fear of snakes and several other reptiles. In order to be a zoologist would I have to work with them?

Yes, snakes would be in zoology, they are an animal species. However, you can specialize in Mammals, Birds, or other species. Herpetology is the study of snakes.

You normally specialize AFTER you take the entire course on zoology. You will have to get over your aversion somehow. Snakes aren't the slimy creatures they are made out to be.

There are specializations and emphases in zoology degrees where you could avoid having to study or work with snakes. You will have to check the curriculum requirements for graduation. My guess is that if you wanted a broadly applicable degree in vertebrate zoology, you will have to study snakes in at least one, two, or more courses. A lower division course in vertebrate zoology is frequently required to get a degree, and you might study about snakes, briefly, but once you start to specialize you probably won't have to study snakes, again.

If you end up working in the field, (not in a zoo), you will see snakes and other reptiles.
