Amalgamated General Corporation is a consulting firm that also offers financial services through its credit division. From time to time the company buys and sells securities intending to earn profits on short-term differences in price. The following selected transactions relate to Amalgamated's investment activities during the last quarter of 2016 and the first month of 2017. Need some clarification on journalised closing entries. Maybe a sample or a format or a website would be great . I need to no what entries go into this journal e.g.. Return inwards and outwards etc...

On Sept. 8th A company received $10,000 cash from McBryan Construction Co. as advance payment on rental equipment.
My question is would that be a debit to cash and a credit to unearned rental fees or would the credit be rental fees earned.
