The Tool and Die industry, called the aristocrats of engineering, is no different than any other industry when it comes to trade union representation, oversight, negotiations, and membership.

Trades Unions came into being from the harsh and unjust treatment of workers in the capitalist system.

The Tolpuddle Martyrs were agricultural labourers in Devon England who were sent to Australia as prisoners of the crown for organising themsleves into a negotiating block of seven persons. These may have been the earliest trade unuinists, and were transported for their bravery, and for their demands for justice, fair treatment, better working conditions, job security, benefits, and wages.

The benefits of trade union membership is that when negotiating better terms, all the workers speak with one voice through their appointed negotiators, and employers have to listen, and usually some compromise is reached and all the workers share the benefits.

I have not found any disadvantages in trade union membership. I do know that in non-union idustries, not all men are paid the same wages for doing the same job, and the injustice of that is self-evident.

A union factory will have fair conditions, benefits, and wages, including health and safety coverage. A non-union factory might not.

Generally, advantages include a measure of job security, especially if you have seniority, and protection from arbitrary treatment or termination by your employer. Disadvantages generally include less flexibility for you to negotiate working conditions for yourself such as salary, benefits, vacation time, breaks, etc. as all that is specified by contract to which both you and your employer are bound and for which you've personally been given little or no input. Sometimes the terms of such contracts make for more generous provisions than would be received by your non-union counterparts but not always. A lot depends on the strength and solidarity of your union and how willing they are to fight for you. Probably the most disadvantageous thing about union membership is the petty regulations to which you're forced to adhere, such as where to park your car, etc. There is also often less chance for advancement in union shops because of seniority regulations requiring bidding for jobs and, once a job has been awarded, you must stay in that job for a minimum amount of time, usually at least a year. Thus opportunities to learn and advance are often stymied for this reason.
