You get what you pay for in most cases.
There are many free anti-virus programs available, some are better then others and they are regularly changing.

What version of windows is this for ?

Think about it... A/V software works by detecting the signature of viruses. To detect the signature, the signature has to be in the A/V software's database of signatures. That's why A/V software is constantly being updated. If the software has no revenue how will they pay for the research to constantly find virus, get the signatures and release updates?

I wouldn't trust a freebie to protect my computer.

Yes, Windows 10 will be a free upgrade for the first year of release. And if you purchased a computer with 8.1 it will run fine.
