Excessive chewing and scratching. Skin rash
    Hello,
My six month old golden retriever has a bad itching and rash problem. Took her to vet today, he did some scrapping on the scabby areas. He did not see any mange mites. Afew weeks ago she started scratching and chewing on elbow area. To the point of sores and bleeding. Last night I went to pick her up and felt a sticky ooze feeling on her tummy. Most for her belly is raw now and oozing that body fluid from it. The vet scrapped the ears , elbows and belly area. No mites found. He said he was going to treat it like the mange at first.
If any one has any ideas of what it could be , I would apreciate the help. Dixie is so miserable. I was wondering if it could be from protein, yeast allergy, nervous problem. I'm lost at what to do to ease her misery. I bathed her in medicated shampoo as instructurcted by vet , and directions on bottle. She's still scratching and chewing. Thanks for any help in advance.

Likely your vet has already cover most of the things we might suggest. You are feeding a decent chow and little else? Most dogs will thrive on most chows.

I'm feeding her a purina dry dog food, 18% protein. She is not as active as her breed should be due to where I live. She was on a food named PMI puppy 27% pritein.

Purina makes several grades, but they all provide a good diet.

Is she on vet prescribed flea preventative once monthly? Sometimes a flea allergy brings on a secondary skin infection. You might try a second opinion or a referral to skin specialist at this point. Six months old is WAY to young to have any food/contact/inhalent allergies usually. Did your vet prescribe antibiotics and anihistamines as well as mange treatment? Both Sarcoptic and Demadectic mange take a LONG time to heal and dog will look much worse before it gets better but usually always have a secondary skin infection that needs to be addressed. Check with the vet on any meds for itch relief including topical lotions.
Also, I see you are in Polk County-make sure you take Dixie to a small animal vet, not just a large animal vet. Large animal vets sometimes don't focus so much on dogs and cats!

I am sure your vet covered most of the possibilities.

We had our dog on Purina One for a while and he would scratch so much. We would find him rolling on his back on our gravel driveway. He was miserable. His coat was dry. I recently changed his food to Nutra - for skin and coats. His scratching has stopped.

    Hope this helps.
