General Harry Heth, I think he was under A.P. Hill corps in the battle of Gettysburg had an oversized hat stuffed with paper, which deflected a bullet thereby saving his life. Although he was knocked out.

The division's casualties were heavy and it was held in reserve on July 2nd. Heth himself narrowly escaped a serious head wound. Paper padding an aide had placed in his new hat to help its fit probably saved Heth's life
