what is the issue here, paying for content? or is it the question of the regulator overreaching in a free market?

Very good question clete. Some light reading is in order, free from any spin:

if the issue is that the net should operate differently from any other business, this is poor business. Why shouldn't providers be able to offer premium services. I think this is the nanny state operating to control the market and should be opposed. How can you demand a free market in other things and then regulate a one size fits all for the net. If you do this, then you have to take away controls over banks, health insurers, energy companies, auto makers, airports, airlines; this is the prelude to anarchy

Before the legislatures figure it out we all will trade our laptops for phones (or watches) with apps you buy, and service contracts. The revenue streams are endless.

legislation cannot keep up because they are reactive, not proactive. Politicians create nothing, their role is to control and guide and they don't anticipate the future well.

technology is outstripping our ability to control it and so we need to stop trying to control it. if content is to be controlled it must be only to uncover and restrict illegal activity such as esponage, fraud, copyright infringement and pornography

I'm on the fence on this issue... there are compelling reasons from both sides... and I being in the field I am.. as well as a long time user and consumer of the service... (first started using the Internet in 1981 and have had it in my house since 1995).

Not having net neutrality allows lower cost service as certain high volume services will bear a bigger share of the cost... something you would think the people who are into "redistributing the wealth" would be supporting.

Actually it's the complete opposite. Providers will pick what services/sites you can get at what price point, the rest would be blocked.

Got you beat on the 'net usage too. :-) I used to sell HTML standards - yes, sell them. Weird eh? My brother and I used to Archie and join local BBS.

Not true... Services like netfix and other major video streaming services consume a lions share of the internet capacity now... meaning Grandma and Grandpa and everyone else is having to pay higher prices to support continuing buildout of the networks to prevent logjams from Happening which benifit those minority of providers most of all.

I work with these networks... specifically the international telecom backbones that carry them... I know how they are laid out... I know how they are provisioned... I'm not involved in the sales side of things... but I do see costs and stuff from time to time...

Like I said... I do see this from BOTH sides... and from the carrier side, things are lean, they have been for a long time... with the extra revenue stream of the heaviest users cash will be there to build out more and faster networks than the current cost structure supports now.

Figuratively speaking its really no different than the public highway systems... where commercial trucks are paying a much higher fee to use the roads than are soccer moms.

I remember the Archie and Veronica search engines well... I also remember Mozilla when it first came out... used it at work... then as that was about a year before internet services to the home were really becoming something affordible to the average person, I got it in my house, dialup before broadband became availible. I have 50 meg fiber service to the house now and can get a LOT more....but I honestly bon't need that much speed for what I do,

I never ran a BBS... but I did use a lot of them back in those days.

As far as outright blocking of certain services.....in favor of a few others.....I'm with you there.....not a fan of that happening at all.

There is no way the providers want to LOWER the price of services they render. Yes there needs to be a solution to the streaming services consuming a very large part of the bandwidth, I can see something happening in that area.

That's the problem with americans republicans - they think they're football games are more important that losing the free flow of information or turning a blind eye to how corrupt their political system has become.

American football games ARE more important than sissy Soccer is.

And incidentally... the Democrats are the ones here that are pro-censorship not the Republicans, there are a huge amount of examples of that in just the last 5 years.

But incidently what transpires over OUR networks, (we paid for them after all) is our choice to make (whichever way the decision is made)......not anyone elses.....they can build their own internet if they want to control it.

I personally don't like or want ANYTHING being blocked ......but I also don't think a special interest group from Inner Mongoilia has any business telling us what we can and can't do.

sissy soccer as you call it is played by every nation and is a hard game played largely without rest, all you are doing is showing your ignorance of anything outside your ken.

As far as control of the net is concerned, some control is needed otherwise it is just an excuse to print money
