    Huge gas bill
We just built a new home this summer. We have 2x6 walls and plenty of insulation. However, our gas bill for the month of Dec.-Jan was $460.00!! Gas company has checked and there in no leak. We have a Comfortmaker furnace, not sure of model, and last night with temp. outside of -8, the furnace ran 15 minutes until temp. was met on thermostat, but then in less than 5 minutes was back on and running again for 12 to 15 minutes. Any idea why we are unable to maintain temp. for longer period?

We need to know a few other facts as they significantly contribute to heating.

Geographically where its this and what were your average tempratures... how windy has it been, how many square feet of heated space is it?

Rule of thumb, harsh weather higher gas bill. Be it heating or air conditioning summer or winter extreme temperatures outside make for bigger bills. You just use more kilowatts. Even if you are locked into a minimum rate for kilowatts usage plan from the energy companies, as we have always been.

See if you have such a plan where you are at, and how much do you pay per kilowatts used?

If you were in Miami that would be a big bill. In Green Bay maybe not. Where are you located? -8 degrees would indicate a colder climate. Larger 2 story houses are harder to maintain heat due to wall surface. Windows play a big role. I had a 3,800 sq. ft. home in Marietta, GA that routinely ran $200-300 per month in a cold winter.
