    How do I tell if a phrase is an adjective or an appositive( a noun phrase)?

    Use it in a sentence. It should be correct.

    Now, replace the phrase with one word. If the used word is a noun, the phrase is noun phrase. If the used word is an adjective, it is adjective phrase. If it is verb, it will be verb phrase and if it is adverb, the phrase will be adverb phrase.
