Is this the exact wording? If so, you have a problem every time you have a number that is a multiple of 4&6. For instance, is the 12th customer going to receive a cookie and a muffin?

How can it be 120 when it said they gave away 29 cookies... they didn't say they gave away 30 cookies... if the question said 30 cookies. Then it will be 120 cookies... but it said 29...

Here's how I see it... the 29th cookie went to the 116th customer if you write out the multiples of 4: 4,8,12,16, 20, etc. The next issue is where do you stop? Multiples of 6 would end at 114 or 120. So, that's when you have to figure out where the line ended.

Is algebra required? I think you have enough to answer the question in the problem.

I feel your pain. My daughter is also in the fifth grade, and most of the problems she comes home with, make no sense. My husband, who is actually very good at math, wrote a note to the teacher which said "As soon as you send homework that makes sense, and is precise, I'll help. But until then, you won't get an answer to impossible questions".

Me, I have just realized that when it comes to math, I am not smart than a fifth grader.

Wish I could help, just wanted you to know that I feel your pain.

Well, whenever you need help again, come on back, WG will be here. Me, I can't help you with math, I have issues of my own in that department. ;)

But seriously, stick around, maybe you can help someone else with a problem. We're more than just homework and math crap. :)

I'll be around, too. I'm a west coast teacher, so I may not always be on early. I've taught these grades: k, 3,4,5,6 and high school. Ask away and we will help!
