Alabama family law and custody lawyers
My best friend is too proud to ask for something for free, and I wish that I had more of a way to help her. She is fighting for custody of her son from a dead beat father. The father had a wreck about 5 years ago while he was drunk and high of pot with her son and daughter in the car and she almost lost her daughter because of his careless act. She was at the time trying to give her son's dad a chance to spend time with his son, but that back fired on her. He has never really been a dad that has cared too much about being in his son's life. Her ex's family are the only people that seem to want to see the child. But they are negligent just as bad as the father is. Just within the past 2 years the father has started to fight for visitation rights. My friend's ex's family has a lot of pull in the county where she is fighting for custody and the judges of this county don't seem to want to make her ex do the small things that my friend asks for her ex to do (for example having him take parenting classes and attend counseling). The judge gets no documentation that her ex has done these things, just takes his word for it. This is a man that has recently been awarded unsupervised visitation and has allowed a 9 year old play games that are very violent and caused the child to have a problem sleeping for over a week and also allowed the child to ride a small motorcycle on a road without supervision and the child has fell off and hurt himself. Believe me there is a lot more that I could continue to go on about. The judge will not accept doctors letters about the injuries into the case or information on the games that he allows the child to play.

Now it seems that the lawyer that my friend has been using is on another case that this judge oversees and didn't take kindly to that lawyer appealing the other case that he is on and won't listen to anything that the lawyer tries to say in court on the current case at hand. The lawyer has also tried to request a change of venue because the court in the next county over that started everything seemed to be more understanding and listen to all of the evidence that is being presented, but the judge has refused a change of venue.

My friend is essentially a single mother and has a hard time working and taking care of the two kids that she has. She never asks for a hand-out which I find to be very admirable. She has a lot of expense on her hands now and a lot of work that she puts into raising her children. She now faces a special needs child because of the accident that her ex caused. She has many specialist doctor's appointments and hands on time that she has to spend with her daughter because of her injury. This causes her not to have much money and she has drained herself trying to pay for lawyers to take care of the custody issues.

It now has been brought to her attention to look for another lawyer because of the apparent problems that the judge may have with the current lawyer. But she faces the problem of not having the money to get another lawyer (which will make lawyer number 3). Where can I find information to try to help her find either a pro bono family lawyer? Or are there other ways to get legal help without having to pay upfront all of the money needed?

Any help will be appreciated. Sorry this is so long.

What type of custody is the ex asking for ? She may want to consider a custody evaluation. That way there is more then just her word for the judge to examine. Then if he represents a danger to the children he can get supervised visitation.

She has done that. There has been supervised visitations and limited time visitation (on 4 hours every other weekend). He has now been given full weekends even though stuff continues to come up. The judge just will not take notice in the new things that happen during visitations.
