We had a thunderstorm to end all thunderstorms last night at 1:30 a.m. Whole family was up, it lasted over an hour. And the torrential rain that came with it. Right now it's nice, perfect for the kids tonight.

Good to hear from you Scott.
Shame about the power, but that's what cell phones are for ;)

With more than 30% of cell phone towers either down or without power, cell phone service has been spotty at best. Besides, I don't have a phone with a data plan. So unless I have a WiFi connection, I'm incommunicado.

So glad to hear you're okay Scott. I was out of the loop until Ben posted this thread, now I'm watching the news and all that's going on. Looks horrific.

We got a good dump of snow yesterday, but compared to what you're going through, it's nothing to complain about.

Glad you're safe. Stay that way. :)

It isn't over yet. More to come for northern Ontario, snow and freezing rain in Wawa, Ontario. En.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wawa,_Ontario

Northern Ontario is a little more remote then you can imagine if you are even from NYS.
Bad weather happens there quite often, starting about now. It is the Algoma steel area that supplies much of the north american continent's metal; copper, uranimum, all precious metals and yes diamond mining.

I just got a small ray of hope. Looks like the problem in my area may be due to a single problem affecting 2400 households. If that's the case, power should be restored sooner than later.

I could understand how Alty didn't know. She is western Canada, not worried at that time or place by the effects.
However Toronto area and east were in the direct path of rain and hi winds after it doglegged and came across lake Ontario. After that it went northeast.

Maybe you guys should acquaint yourselves with our topography.

    :)

Most people think that Canada is pretty small. In fact, one of my cousins in Germany wrote to me a few years ago all excited, asking if he could stay with us for 2 years because he got a job offer in Toronto. He thought that he could easily commute to Toronto from my place.

Toronto is a 5 hour flight from where I live.

Canada is a big country, and even though we do get wind of worldwide news, sometimes it takes a bit longer to find out what's going on with our US neighbors, or even our other Canadian neighbors.

I am well aware of the size of Canada and grew up just east of Niagara Falls. This hurricane seemed to be worldwide news.

    LOL! So true.

Truth told, I don't watch the news. I tend to steer clear of that depressing stuff. I don't watch a lot of TV period.

If I wasn't on this site I probably wouldn't be aware of half the stuff going on in the world.

I know sponge Bob, and he lives under the sea, but it really looked like an igloo to me. Heck, Bob lives in a pineapple. How did that get under the sea? If they can have a pineapple than they can have an igloo. Just saying. :)

The pineapple, or the block of ice?

    Wait...

Who lives in a pineapple under the sea?

    Sponge bob square pants!

Absorbent and yellow and porous is he!

    Sponge bob square pants!

If nautical nonsense is something you wish!

    Sponge bob square pants!

Than hop on the deck and flop like a fish!

You get the point, and sadly, I didn't Google that. :(

The big story today is former Bush Press Secretary Scott McClellan's "scathing criticisms" of Bush in his new memoir. As I recall, past discussions of Mr. McClellan concluded - on both sides of the debate - that he was an incompetent boob. Current Press Secretary Dana Perino and McClellan...
