Leak in ceiling from upstairs shower
The ceiling in my downstairs bathroom leaks when the upstairs shower is used. The leak starts about five minutes after the shower has been turned on and continues after the shower is turned off. The leak is coming from two or three small holes in the wood directly beneath the upstairs shower. The holes look like they were drilled. The drain pipe is not leaking. I've read all the other shower leak posts, but didn't see any mention of similar holes. Does anyone know what the holes are for? I don't have a picture, but I can describe them in more detail.

If the holes are larger, about an inch, they may have been left from when some pipes were rerouted. It is possible somebody may have drilled smaller holes in the past to let the leaking water out before it spreads and ruins the plaster. In either case, the thing to do, is to follow the directions Tom gave in other threads to fix the leak. If you need different information for your shower, post the details.

Good morning Ben,
The leak might be coming THROUGH the holes but it's my bet it isn't coming FROM the holes. I'll make you another bet. You didn't say but I bet your shower is a tile shower as oposed to a one piece fiberglass or plastic one. Do I win? I don't have any idea what the holes are there for. If you could describe the location in more detail perhaps I could hazzard a guess. It has been my experience that most shower leaks don't come from the drain or drain pipes. They occur where the shower stream hits the tile wall. Tile grout can shrink over years of water from the shower head hitting it. Since most shower pans onlet extend 6 or 8 inches up the wall the water leaks in above the pan and comes down the wall outside. The repair has two options. You can regrout the tile around where the stream hits or you can take and run silicon jel over the old grout and waterproof it. When my shower developed a leak I ran silicon jel in the corner where it was leaking from. That was over 10 years ago and it hasn't leaked since.
