Crockpot question...
Has anyone tried to crockpot meat (in this case chicken ) that is not completely dethawed? I'm thinking it should be fine, I would just add a bit less liquid than I normally would... any issues anyone has had doing this?

I would advise against it... because you will have no idea when the meat is thawed and the cooking would actually start... unless you are willing to take a chance with a case of salmonella.

If it's a long-ish cooking time (> 4 hours approx) then it shouldn't a problem. You may run into the issues of having the outside overcooked while the inside is just right.

Eh - salmonella is not on the menu tonight... I had a crockpot chicken marsala recipe I was going to try, but I think I'll wait for the chick to dethaw and make it the traditional way.. thanks for the info you two...

I'm in the better safe than sorry camp when it comes to chicken and pork... and I'm a guy that likes my steaks medium rare...

I throw in frozen chicken breasts all the time into the crock-pot! I love it! Before leaving for work I'll put in a couple with some sauce and/or water, or whatever my recipe calls for, put it on low and by dinner time everything is always done and cooked perfectly!

Thawing in the crock pot really doesn't matter as long as it's done when you eat it. Of course you can overcook anything in a crock pot too, so you need a sense of timing.
You shouldn't have to worry about salmonella because the crockpot can't be on too low a temp.

This gave me pause - it's thawed, not de-thawed.
At any rate my crockpot cookbook says NOT to cook frozen meat (or foods which are not completely thawed).

Ha! Judyk I guess I've been saying it wrong forever! It gave me pause when I read your post, I was like, what? And then I was like, oh, yeah... thawed, not 'dethawed', guess that doesn't really make sense!

But I loved it - dethawed would be frozen and the new "buzz" word around here.

You can dethaw chicken if you sit it outside on a cold day in winter... (when its below freezing)

Not really pertinent to this thread. But during a very bad ice storm back in the 70's that took out power for a couple weeks before it was restored when I was in high school. Everyone in the Neighborhood saved their frozen food putting it outside in the shade, and the fridge by bringing it inside and outside to keep it cold but keeping it from freezing outside...

Think it was the winter of 75-76... tens of Millions were out of power for weeks in the middle of winter... so many power lines were taken down by the ice storm. Was all we could do to keep the houses warm enough the pipes didn't freeze.
