What is the D drive ?
Honestly you do not want to upgrade to Vista anyway as it's "not very good".
You can only do a one step upgrade, so that would be XP.

Open the Case to make the cables are all plugged in correctly. And get into the BIOS and see if the BIOS is seeing the CD Rom if not might be a bad CD Rom, if the CDROM is the D Drive.

If the D drive is an added hard drive, remember that ntfs drives can see fat32 drives cause ntfs was created after fat32. But a fat32 drive knows nothing of ntfs and cannot identify it as a file system.
