Since sam only has one neighbor, he lives on the end of the block. The grey house is on the other end of the block. Since the red house is two houses away from the blue witch is sam's, the only remaining house is pink. So the color of the houses starting with sam's is: blue, pink, red, and grey. So the pink house is sam's only neighbor, which is the old maid. Whether the old maid is kate or joe (could be a girl's name) is undeterminable.
