Finding the file extension that a Program uses
Not having any luck with Google on this one.

The question: What file extension does a database file created by Avanquest's Database Professional have?

I know about FILExt - The File Extension Source for searching by file extension, but does anyone know of a search tool to search by software name?

    Thanks!

OK there's an easy way to do this in XP.
Open My Computer > Tools > Folder OPtions > View Tab > UNcheck "Hide Extensions for known File Types > OK.

Now just browse to the file you want and the extension will be visible.

Weird, I don't see that product in their list (unless I'm at the wrong site):

The program is not on my computer. I had it on the laptop whose hard drive failed, so I'm trying to ID the file type of the database that I really need... so that I can make sure that it's on the list of found files when they (the recovery people) send me the list of files that they see on the drive.

PS. I was going to just download a trial version but the ding-dong's don't have a trial for that one.

I saw that one. I have my serial number but I did not purchase "extended download period" for it - so do not have access to the "re-download" area. I emailed them begging them to reconsider and allow me to re-download since I'm such a valued customer :) we'll see how that goes.

I typically save executable files for software in various locations, but in this case I can't find it.

Do you remember what you named one of the files? Can you search for that?

I've searched everywhere. I'm typically religious about saving all files in My Docs - so that my backups (which are admittedly not frequent enough) of My Docs have everything, but in this case I'm thinking that I goofed... and let the file be saved to the folder of the software.

I can access the bad drive to see the folders but I cannot open anything under Documents and Settings to see file types or file names.
