    Informal guidance counseling is usually with someone that's not trained as a counselor.

    Formal counseling is with someone that's a licensed counselor.

    A good example of an informal counselor would be a friend offering advice on a problem you're having.

    A formal counseling session would usually be held in an office by a licensed counselor.
